Saverio Mercadante's opera I due Figaro saw its first modern staging in Salzburg under the direction of Riccardo Muti. Only in recent years have musicologists acknowledged Mercadante's pivotal role in the development of the Italian Bel canto. I due Figaro presents an amusing subject which by affinity forms a trilogy with Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. This debut release on the Ducale label was recorded live in 2011 at the Teatro Aligheri, Ravenna.

This month's top releases include competing versions of Bach's violin concertos played by two of the world's leading period-instrument violinists. On Channel, Rachel Podger is joined by her ensemble Brecon Baroque (p.6) and on Onyx, Viktoria Mullova is backed by Accademia Bizantina and harpsichordist Ottavio Dantone (p.18). Keeping the focus on concertos, another star violinist, James Ehnes, is featured on a recording of works by Britten and Shostakovich for Onyx (p.17) and Hyperion's star pianist Steven Osborne is the soloist in works by Stravinsky (p.11). Our classical priorities are rounded out with recordings of Wagner opera excerpts with Iván Fischer on Channel (p.5) and Valery Gergiev conducting Szymanowski's first two symphonies on LSO Live (p.15). Non classical recordings of note include a specially-priced set of recordings by jazz trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf (p.25) and single-disc releases of Analogue Productions' surround-sound SACD remasterings of six classic albums by The Doors (p.26).
Please note: promotional copies are available for priority titles ONLY

IMPORTFollowing on their highly acclaimed début album, the period instrument Chiaroscuro Quartet returns with another recording of chamber music of the classical period. Their approach, firmly committed and imaginative, fits particularly well with the trail-blazing works on this recording. In its day, Beethoven’s famous “Serioso” quartet was considered avant-garde and experimental. Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue is a veritable lesson in the art of counterpoint — rich with dissonance and brilliant in its subtle complexity and inventiveness.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDJS Bach reveled in the many musical possibilities presented by
concertos that feature several instruments. Drawing on the precedents of Vivaldi and others, Bach’s probing musical intellect led him down novel paths of invention where the collaborative and antagonistic features of the genre reached unprecedented levels of complexity. This program features Bach’s double and triple concertos performed and directed by virtuoso violinist Rachel Podger and accompanied by the dynamic and highly polished chamber ensemble Brecon Baroque.
“Podger is utterly undogmatic, preferring instead to see all instruments as tools at the service of any musician’s primary focus: the music itself.”

IMPORTViolinist Livia Sohn is the featured soloist on this recording of Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto — a landmark of the repertoire, unbridled in its lyricism and constituting a poignant commentary on the devastating brutality of war. Composer Jonathan Berger, dismayed by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, also wrote a violin concerto, Jiyeh, to express his frustration with the senselessness of war. Sohn, for whom the work was written, is partnered with cimbalom soloist Jan Roykta on this world première recording.
IMPORTOn this release from the orchestra’s own label, Helicon Records, conductor Yoel Levi leads the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in fresh and vibrant performances of two Haydn symphonies — the middle-period, six-movement Symphony No.60 and the composer’s well-known Symphony No.104, his final effort in the genre. Levi also accompanies the recording début of 12-year-old Israeli prodigy Maya Tamir in Haydn’s Piano Concerto No.11.

IMPORTRarely available on one disc, this recording from Hyperion presents the complete music for piano and orchestra by Igor Stravinsky, performed by the Gramophone Award-winning team of pianist Steven Osborne, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ilan Volkov. The taut rhythmic brilliance of this music is perfectly suited to the particular talents of these superb performers. In particular, Volkov’s mastery of Stravinsky’s neo-classical idiom is clear from the ecstatic critical response to his recordings of many of the composer’s orchestral works.
“Steven Osborne, ever a poised, technically impeccable virtuoso, combines clarity with heart.”

IMPORTThis fourth volume of Haydn String Quartets finds period band The London Haydn Quartet on sparkling form. Their previous recordings have been praised for the “glowing sound of gut strings played perfectly in tune… the ensemble’s delicacy of nuance and sensitivity to harmonic color, treating the listener as a privileged eavesdropper” (Gramophone). This competitively priced set contains the six Op.33 quartets, which Haydn wrote in Esterhazy after neglecting the genre for a decade, and which immediately became popular around Europe on publication.
IMPORTThe Westminster Cathedral Choir returns to acclaimed Scottish composer James MacMillan, whose powerful, passionate and luminous music has made him one of the best-loved choral composers of today. Included on this recording is a dramatic setting of the Tenebrae Responsories, a spiritually engaging and emotionally involving work which, in its searing intensity and some of its choral effects, relates back to 1993’s Seven Last Words from the Cross, one of MacMillan’s seminal earlier works. The choir is joined by London Brass for jubilant settings of Tu es Petrus, Summae Trinitati and Ecce sacerdos magnus.

This glorious recording from the choir of St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle includes The Lamb — perhaps one of the best-known choral works of the late twentieth century. The Choir of St George’s Chapel, under Christopher Robinson, consists of 24 boy choristers and twelve Lay Clerks singing alto, tenor and bass. They frequently collaborate with London based ensembles and give one of the main concerts at the Windsor Festival.

This Helios series reissue featuring The Raphael Ensemble pairs the work with Arensky’s String Quartet No.2, Op.35, which was dedicated to the memory of Tchaikovsky. Formed in 1982, the Raphael Ensemble has given many BBC broadcasts, especially of unusual and neglected masterpieces. IMPORTBenoît Haller and his ensemble La Chapelle Rhénane present a powerful and highly personal version of this timeless, universal masterpiece, marked by the intense commitment of twelve vocal soloists chosen for their specific vocal color and their fidelity to Handel’s music. Recorded live, this Messiah offers the perfect balance of virtuosity, authenticity and spiritual fervor and sincerity.
IMPORTOne of the great forgotten figures in the history of music — possibly the best-kept secret of French Romanticism — is undoubtedly Charles-Valentin Alkan. He was admired by Liszt and nicknamed “the Berlioz of the piano” by Hans von Bülow. On this recording, pianist Pascal Amoyel showcases all the composer’s many facets. The disc’s key work is the Grande Sonate Les quatre âges — a colossal work and a romantic idealization of the form that undoubtedly influenced Liszt. Other works include selected shorter pieces such as the sublime Esquisses.

IMPORT / SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDValery Gergiev explores the intense expression, fervor and spirituality of Polish composer Karol Szymanowski with his first recording of the composer’s Symphonies Nos.1 & 2. For decades, Szymanowski’s music was rarely heard outside Poland. Today, he is recognized as one of Poland’s greatest musical figures. These first two symphonies, both unconventional in style and format, make for an enthralling listening experience and provide insight into Szymanowski’s ecstatic musical character. His first symphony is drenched in evocative Romanticism and is an extremely powerful and emotionally intense composition. His second, a chamber-like work, artfully interweaves layer upon layer of seemingly disparate musical ideas to form a complex tapestry that became one of the composer’s favorite of his own works.

A wor ld r enowned specialist in the music of Sergei Prokofiev, Valery Gergiev and his Mariinsky Orchestra and opera company have performed all of the composer’s symphonies, concerti and operas on numerous occasions, both in St. Petersburg
and on tour. This new video of Prokofiev’s opera The Gambler, recorded and filmed in high-resolution at the historic Mariinsky Theatre in 2010, stars celebrated Russian tenor Vladimir Galuzin and bass Sergei Aleksashkin. Premiered in 1929 at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussels, the opera was originally conceived for first performance at the Mariinsky Theatre, but it was postponed due to the Revolution in 1917. On this filmed version, Georgian director Temur Chkheidze (who directed the opera with critical success at the Metropolitan Opera in 2001) gives a fresh look to Prokofiev’s first opera. The Gambler is a four-act opera that displays the dramatic highs and lows involved in the game of chance. All of the characters fall victim to the temptation of gambling, each one consumed by the obsession and greed that drives them.

IMPORTAfter a series of critically acclaimed recordings o n O n y x — m o s t recently his recordings o f v io l in conce r to s by Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky — James Ehnes teams up with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and its charismatic music director Kirill Karabits in concertos by Benjamin Britten and Dmitri Shostakovich. An early work, the Britten was completed in the September of 1939 just as World War II broke out. The work is an emotional commentary on the senselessness of war. The first of Shostakovich’s two violin concertos was composed in 1948 for David Oistrakh. It had to wait until 1955 for its premiere due to a ban on “serious” music by the notorious Zhdanov Conference and Party Decree of 1948. After Stalin’s death in 1953, Shostakovich was finally able to exert his artistic freedom. The concerto is a truly symphonic work in scale — grand, dramatic and cast in four movements with a huge cadenza placed before the finale, in which the sun bursts out in a brilliant helter-skelter coda.

IMPORTViktoria Mullova’s Bach recordings for Onyx have received worldwide praise. For this album, she once again teams up with harpsichordist
Ottavio Dantone in a program that pairs the two famous solo Violin Concertos with two concertos arranged for violin. The Violin Concerto BWV1053 was arranged from the second harpsichord concerto and the Concerto for Violin & Harpsichord BWV1060 was arranged from the concerto for violin and oboe. Having worked together for many years, Mullova and Dantone sought a piece they could both play with orchestra, and this brilliant arrangement is the result. Performed here with the Accademia Bizantina, it is the perfect conclusion to a masterful Bach program.
“To hear Mullova play Bach is, simply, one of the greatest things you can experience.”— THE GUARDIAN

IMPORTPieter Wispelwey and the Flanders Symphony Orchestra conducted by Seikyo Kim perform two romantic cello concertos whose neglect is hard to fathom. Édouard Lalo penned a variety of large scale orchestral works, including the famous Symphonie espagnole for violin, a piano concerto, and the Cello Concerto heard here. A strong work in the Germanic tradition, its comparative neglect in the concert hall is difficult to understand. The second Cello Concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns, written in 1902, has all of the composer’s flair for style and elegance, and is possibly more challenging for the soloist than its A-minor sibling.
IMPORTThe young German cellist Leonard Elschenbroich has rapidly made a name for himself as one of the most exciting and gifted cellists of his generation. On this new release, Elschenbroich teams up with one of his regular chamber music collaborators, pianist Alexei Grynyuk. Together they perform Rachmaninov’s passionate Cello Sonata and arrangement of Shostakovich’s Viola Sonata made by Daniil Shafran with Shostakovich’s blessing. In the sonata, Shostakovich alludes to several of his previous works, from the Suite for two pianos to the opening movement of his Symphony No.14.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDThis SACD remaster from Praga’s Reminiscences series features pianist Sviatoslav Richter playing solo works by Schumann. This recording of the Etudes symphoniques marked the first time he had played the piece in over twenty years, and his recording of the Fantasy Op.17 was Richter’s first in thirty years. The utmost interpreter of the tormented and introverted spirit of Schumann, Richter identified profoundly with the composer, rejecting the common association of his works with a dream-like, unstable romantic world, and with the frustrations of adolescence. Instead, he preferred to focus on the heroic, passionate and tragic aspects of the composer’s music.
IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFollowing the award-winning RCO Live release of Shostakovich’s seventh symphony, Jansons’s take on the composer’s tenth adds another benchmark performance to the orchestra’s discography. The Symphony No.10, written in 1953 was a milestone work. After his music had been publicly denounced for being too abstract in 1948, Shostakovich had finally plucked up the courage to write another symphony. Ever since Kirill Kondrashin and Bernard Haitink first led performances of Shostakovich’s symphonies in the late 1970s, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has astonished listeners with their expertise in this repertoire. With the tenure of Mariss Jansons, a degree of authenticity is added; like Kondrashin before him, Jansons has experienced himself what it is like to work under Soviet conditions.

IMPORTWolfgang Rihm’s compositions for string quartet are as extensive as they are varied. A selection of these works can be found on this recording featuring the Minguet Quartet and pianist Markus Bellheim. Rihm’s String Quartet No.11 is a piece of work of extreme contrasts — restrained and explosive, simple and virtuosic, fragile and forced to the point of screaming, tightly homophonic and polyphonically splintered to the edge of total dissolution. Interscriptum is an elaboration of Rihm’s twelfth string quartet. To the quartet ensemble, treated as one instrument, a piano part is added, which initiates a dialogue and creates entirely new relationships within the piece. Grave is dedicated to the Alban Berg Quartet, and was written in response to the group’s request for a requiem.
IMPORTAlthough György Ligeti composed only three works for the organ, these pieces mark significant stages in the course of his compositional development. More importantly, they revolutionized the world of organ music and provided the initial spark for an entire wave of new music for the organ. Volumina completely dispenses with the parameters normally used to structure time in a musical work. Harmonies unfolds as an unbroken chain of ten-note chords. Coulée is a chain of extremely fast notes that describe a slow harmonic progression. Also included are organist Dominik Sustek’s organ transcription of Ligeti’s eleven-movement piano cycle Musica ricercata as well as Sprachsignale — one of Sustek’s own original compositions that was inspired by Ligeti’s Artikulation.

DOMESTICFile in: JazzPaolo Fresu is one of today’s most gifted and well-known trumpeters. He counts Miles Davis and Chet Baker among his primary influences, and his own unique sound and music are at once clear, brilliant and joyful. Fresu founded the Devil Quartet in 2004 together with three fantastic musicians and close friends — guitarist Bebo Ferra, bass player Paolino Dalla Porta and drummer Stefano Bagnoli. In keeping with the Quartet’s name, their new album, Desertico, is devilishly inventive and beautiful. Consisting of original compositions — except for a captivating version of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and a poignant version of “Blame It On My Youth” — the album is infused with a delightful blend of serenity and jubilation.
IMPORTFile in: JazzWinds of Change marks twenty-five years of artistic collaboration between David Linx and Diederik Wissels. Their repertoire is known to have given a new place and a new breath to the voice in contemporary jazz. Since 1992, the duo has recorded ten albums and collaborated with such artists as Paolo Fresu, Fay Claassen, Maria Pia de Vito, Maria Joao and Mario Laginha. Linx and Wissels have received all of Europe’s major awards for jazz recordings. Many of their songs have become standards that have been adopted by many vocalists in the world. Linx and Wissels are accompanied by Christophe Wallemme on bass, Donald Kontomanou on drums and special guest star Ibrahim Maalouf. These songs are a reflection of the times, steeped in nostalgia.

IMPORTFile in: World / RomaniaMaria Tanase (1913-1963) is loved in Romania like no singer that has followed her. 2013 marks the centenary of her birth, an anniversary that inspired Berlin-based Romanian artist Oana Catalina Chitu, to pay homage to the great singer with this new release. Tanase developed her own expressive way of interpretation, making songs of every origin her own. Then the iron curtain fell between Eastern and Western Europe, and Tanase was increasingly forgotten in Romania throughout the 1960s. Today, music from the Balkans, and from Romania in particular, is better known than ever before. Chitu is a part of this vibrant scene and her diva-like on-stage persona is reminiscent of times long past, when bohemians and intellectuals met in Bucharest’s salons.
IMPORTFile in: World / BalkansStand Up, People is an astonishing collection of rare pop songs by Roma Gypsy musicians from Tito’s Yugoslavia. Combining rootsy Gypsy Folk rhythms with the new influences of Bollywood film music, Turkish psychedelia and British and American pop-rock, the album showcases Roma musicians’ early experiments with synthesizers and electric guitars. These nineteen tracks have been resurfaced thanks to the vinyl-hunting efforts of London duo Vlax Records (Philip Knox and Nathaniel Morris). All the tracks were then painstakingly restored to their former glory at Carvery Cuts Studio, London. Included are rare early recordings of the king and queen of Gypsy music, Šaban Bajramovic and Esma Redžepova, as well as other lesser known singers such as Muharem Serbezovski.
