lies, lies & statistics
lies, lies & statistics
For a movemenT WHoSe rallying cry iS a STaTiSTic, THe occupy movemenT iSn’T abouT numberS aT all. The media (both covering and coming from the movement) have peppered their coverage with data, statistics, and facts. This bom-bardment of information is easily brushed off as lies, lies and statistics.
I aim to change that. I want to present the information in a way that will actually be mean-ingful. I have been creating prototypes and infor-mation system mockups for use in an interactive web environment designed to explore and under-stand the Occupy Movement (OWS).
OWS has evolved in the two months since its inception. This piece will be a tool for undersand-ing the core motivating issues as well as exploring the activity of OWS itself.
The information that will be covered can be divided in to four sections: influences, occupa-tions, the 99 and the issues. However, an under-standing of this movement can not be achieveed through linear hierarchical information. The four sections are fluidly linked through content and form so that the viwer may approach any issue from any angle.

WHaT iS my role in all oF THiS? OWS is happening now. That is why I was drawn to it as a thesis topic. And that is why I am struggling to define my role for this project. Participant Observation allows for a level of in-volvement that conventional journalism does not. But as I have done more and more research into the movement, I have also found myself tak-ing increasingly large steps back. I want to pass on this information with as much credibility and transparency as possible. So while I pay at-tention: I watch the live streams, I tweet and I discuss; I am not camping, not getting arrested and not participating in consensus building. I do not wish for my own beliefs and issues that I am most concerned about to dominate the piece. I want this movement to speak for itself. Liberty Plaza is a platform for discussion, not solutions. I want this piece to work in that same manner - to foster discussion, regardless of what I as the designer feel.
On the following pages you will find representa-tions of the information that will be included, a
general sense of how the systems wil be united and mock ups of various systems.

DAY 27
specic occupation /time
As seen in the information map, ‘occupations’ may be viewed on many different levels and scales. This mock up shows a na-tional portait of the movement
While here we have a local camp’s breakdown. As often as possible, the navigation between modes will be as simple as the larger scale being incor-porated into the localized scale. i.e. the national map shrinking down in to the bottom of the frame.
The charts will all be dynamic. As you scroll through the timelines, everything changes correspondingly

demographics option AThe 99 ‘s demo-graphic data, as
well as graph-ics showing how
people are involved is one of the main
points that ties personal narratives
to statistical un-derstanding of the
situation. By follow-ing one 99er’s story
through demo-graphics, involve-
ment, and into the larger economic
issues, we can see a more compre-
hensive view of the movement.

I am 24 years old and am $90,000 in debt from getting a college education. Why are we being punished with debt for getting a higher education, which is what everyone says we should do! College was supposed to make my life easier but now I can barely make my loan payments.I am the 99%!

This version would show the information over a 30 year span. From here you could select the 10 year model or pick one of the factors to look into further. The purpose of these systems is to gather information of general trends, not details. (Specific detail could be seen by hovering over each mode.)

Here we see one factor, unpacked into the various elements that make up the issue. Know-ing the unemployment rate is one thing (9%) but understanding that the unemployment rate does not include an additional 8% of the population [who are either part time employed, but want to work full time, have been unemployed for longer than 6 months or have simply stopped looking] we begin to see a much larger picture of the economic factors.
In this system we see the wealth distribution and median incomes. The discrepency is immediatly obvious.
revieWer 1:Big system should be integrated into the mockupsScale of difference should be considered. Thousands versus Billions. Doesn’t think it needs to be mathmatically on scale but not visually misleading either
revieWer 2:Dot representation (bubbles) are the easiest way to
see the differences year to year and between the cat-egories. Much better, visually, to see that than the pie
charts from the earlier version. More intuitive.
revieWer 3:Thinks the graphic system takes too long to under-stand. Wants them to be side by side, not in circles.Thinks it works well when the numbers are extreme, not otherwise.

revieWer 4:The overall look is great. Very clean, feels easy to navigate. The timelines presented are a little bit hard to figure out.
I can gather the overall picture of the information you are trying to convey, but I am unable to fully grasp the details,
which would help me to find the overall message you are arguing for. However, if you are planning on making more
details available by hovering over each mode, I believe this problem would be solved.
As far as the information presented, I this you cover the move-ment really well. I could hear more about the message. I know
is is covered to an extent, but is there a way to represent the rhetoric as well as the data behind it. I think that is a really
important part of this movement specifically, so is necessary in a complete coverage of it.
