Handling Kitchen Emergencies

Burns

Run cold water over burned area. Never use butter or direct ice.

Cuts

Apply direct pressure with a clean paper towel.

The fire alarm sounds

1.Turn off all appliances.

2.Walk toward the nearest door.

3.Report to parking space # 106 behind school near football field.

Fire in a pan on the range

Cover the pan with a lid or pour on baking soda. Never use water.

A fire in the oven

Shut the door to cut off the oxygen. Turn off the oven. Wait for fire to burn out before opening.

Oven mitt on fire

Put in the sink and pour on baking soda

Tea Towel on fire

Leave where it is and pour on baking soda

Using a fire extinguisher

1.Pull out the plastic pin.

2.Aim nozzle toward fire.

3.Squeeze lever. Sweep back and forth at base of fire.

Broken Glass on counter

• Throw away surrounding food

• Pick up large pieces with paper towel

• Wipe up shards with damp paper towel

Broken Glass on floor

1.Pick up large pieces with paper towel.

2.Sweep up small pieces with broom, brush and dust pan.

3.Wipe up tiny shards with damp paper towel

Spills on floor

• Wipe up with paper towel
