TEACHING

Informatics(Fall and Spring term of BA1)

Bioinformatics(Fall term of BA3 - MBT)

Engineers often face time-consuming and repetitive tasks, especially when they have to gather and process data

‒ collecting information from websites‒ converting files from one format into another‒ analyzing, summarizing, and visualizing information

Given the exponential flow of newly incoming data, engineers are forced to automate these tasks

INFORMATICS: BACKGROUND

To know how to describe time-consuming and repetitive tasks in such a way that these tasks can be performed automatically

To know how to work and think in Python and UNIX‒ popular tools for teaching introductory computer science‒ bridge the communication gap between humans and computers

INFORMATICS: GOALS

Teaching‒ theory lectures‒ supervised hands-on sessions

online exercise platform (home campus)

‒ self-study using two handbooks

Evaluation‒ programming assignments

topics: biology, chemistry,physics, and mathematics

‒ open book exam

INFORMATICS: PRACTICALITIES

TEACHING

Informatics(Fall and Spring term of BA1)

Bioinformatics(Fall term of BA3 - MBT)

Introduction to bioinformatics‒ field born after biologists discovered how to sequence DNA‒ studies mathematical and computational techniques for deciphering

the language of DNA, RNA, and proteins (molecular biology)

‒ part of modern biology, often facilitating new data-driven discoveries

BIOINFORMATICS: BACKGROUND

To understand the interaction between biology, mathematics, and computer science

To understand standard problem-solving techniques (algorithms)in the field of bioinformatics

BIOINFORMATICS: GOALS (1)

To be able to design, implement, and analyze new algorithms

To improve skills in terms ofcreative problem solving,out-of-the-box thinking, andprogramming

BIOINFORMATICS: GOALS (2)

Teaching‒ theory lectures‒ supervised hands-on sessions‒ self-study using a handbook

Evaluation‒ theory questions‒ programming assignments

topics: motif finding, DNA sequence alignment, etc.

‒ closed book exam

BIOINFORMATICS: PRACTICALITIES
