CAPE FEAR POULTRY GROWERS’ GROUP
Growers Guide
Background of Cape Fear Poultry Growers
The Cape Fear Poultry Growers’ Group is a group of contract poultry growers formerly employed by Pilgrim’s Pride. These growers reside in Chatham, Cumberland, Harnett, Lee, Moore, and Randolph counties. As a result of extremely high feed and energy costs associated with a sluggish economy, Pilgrim’s Pride decided to restructure the company resources and, as a result, the Siler City processing plant and feed mill were closed. Pilgrim’s Pride found themselves with too many growers. Pilgrim’s Pride decided to revoke contracts for these 44 growers resulting in a loss of over 15 million dollars into the North Carolina economy. Cape Fear Poultry Growers’ Group was formed as a result of no immediate integrator filling in the void created by Pilgrim’s Pride revoking the growers contracts as of January 1, 2009. Concerned that no local integrators may be willing to engage these growers because of the overall poor economy, the growers decided to band together to explore new possibilities. Cape Fear Poultry Growers’ Group has a steering committee made up of eight farm families that is working to aggressively represent the 44 former Pilgrim’s Pride contract poultry grow-ers. The steering committee is pres-ently working with the NC Department of Agriculture, NC Poultry Federation, NC State University, US Department of Agriculture, Cape Fear Farm Credit, Carolina Farm Credit, NC Contract Poultry Growers Association, Congressman Bob Etheridge, Rural Advancement Foundation Interna-tional (RAFI), and the NC Cooperative Extension Service. The primary goals of the Cape Fear Poultry Growers’ Group are to bring these dis-placed poultry growers back into the mainstream of poultry production in North Caro-lina by negotiating new contracts with poultry integrators and to seek an alternative way to salvage their poultry businesses to include the potential of forming a grower-based cooperative. The Cape Fear Poultry Growers’ Group Growers Guide may be accessed online at: http://chatham.ces.ncsu.edu/files/library/19/CapeFearGrowersGroupBook.pdf
