Greyhound Racing

• Greyhound racing is an organized, competitive industry in which greyhound dogs are raced around a track.

• The dogs chase a lure(traditionally an artificial 'hare' or 'rabbit') on a track until the greyhounds cross the finish line.

• As with horse racing, greyhound races often allow the public to wager on the outcome.

• Tracks are generally oval in shape with a circumference of somewhere around 400 metres and have 4 “bends”.

RACES

• A race meeting normally consists of 12 races, with 6 dogs competing in each race. With only around 5 to15 minutes between each race.

• A race programme is a listing of all the races being held and the greyhounds that are running in the races.

• Some programme may vary in the way they look but will display the same information

DISTANCE- distance of race in meters.

TRAP- the trap number the greyhound ran from.

SPLIT - the time it took the greyhound to reach the winning linefor the first time. In most races, the runners cross the line twice. The split time gives a fairly good guide to the greyhound’s early pace. The faster a greyhound’s split time, the better chance it has of leading.

POSITION- Often called “bend” order. Shows the position the greyhound occupied during a race at various points (each bend.)

FINISHED- the position the greyhound held at the winning line.

WIN/SEC- details the name of the greyhound that won the race or who was the second.

TIME- is the winning time; the actual time the race was won in.

How To a Read Race Card

GOING-. an assessment of how the track was running. Usuallya track would run slower after heavy rain, for instance. In the summer, tracks are heavily watered but dry quickly which normally result in the track running on the fast side. 

“N”- denotes normal going (+) and (-) is in 100th of a second(+) – if it has plus means it ran dry (-) - if it has minus means it ran wet

GRADE- indicates the class of a greyhound, usually expressed as A1, A2, A3, etc. The lower the number, the better the class.

A1 is the highest A9 is the lowest

Additional Information:•The total number of grades varies from track to track. The grade is accompanied by a prefix:Usually:D for sprinters, A for standard runners,S for stayers andH for hurdlers.

•So, when looking at a race card you may find grades such as D2, H3, A9 and S1. 

•OR- stands for ‘open race’ , means that a race opens to greyhounds from other tracks.

-The prefix “T” Stands for “trial” (example: T’2’means ‘2-runner trial’).

- You are betting on which greyhound will win the race.

• PLACE MARKET

-You are betting on which dog will finish second.

• FORECAST

- You are betting on which traps will finish 1st and 2nd.
