Government and politics in Afghanistan

Alden Vogt

In 1709 Mirwais Hotak establishes Afghanistan an independent state.

Ahmad Shah Durrani stretches Afghanistan territory and creates Durrani Empire.

In 1838 British India invaded the during the First Anglo-Afghan War and started to influence the politics of Afghanistan.

In 1919 King Amanalluha Khan consumes the throne after Third Anglo Afghan War, British influenced ends

1973 Mohammed Daoud Khan, Prime Minister and a member of the royal

family, seizes power while King Mohammad Zahir Shah is in Italy.

The leftist Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan gains power during Saur Revolution. Daoud Khan gets assassinated as well with his

support group

1987  Mohammad Najibullah becomes president and replaces Babrak Karmal .

1989 Russian army takes out all troops from the country, and the

United States also leaves Afghanistan.

1992 Kabul falls to mujahideen powers,and starts the

civil war.

1996 Kabul along and most of the country are forced to fall to the Taliban.

2001 United States are sent to invade Afghanistan.

Hamid Karzai was elected head of state in 2004 (5 Year terms )

Re-elected in 2009 and is still currently the Democratic leader of state.

2014 Ashraf Ghani elected as president.
