The Google Driverless Car is like any car, but:

It can steer itself while looking out for obstacles.

It can accelerate itself to the correct speed limit.

It can stop and go itself based on any traffic

condition.

It can take its passengers anywhere it wants to

go safely, legally, and comfortably.

Introduction

The project is currently being

led by: Sebastian Thrun

Director of the Stanford

Artificial Intelligence

Laboratory

Co-inventor of Google Street

View

History

Google Maps

Provides the car with road information

Hardware Sensors

Provides the car with real time environment

conditions

Artificial Intelligence

Provides the car with real time decisions

Components

Google Maps interacts with

GPS and acts like a

database.

Speed Limits.

Upcoming intersections.

Traffic Report.

Nearby collisions.

Directions.

Google Maps

Sensors attempt to create fully observable

environment

The hardware sensors gives real time

environmental properties.

Environment is dynamic so need real time results.

results.

Hardware Sensors

1. LIDAR

2. VIDEO CAMERA

3. POSITION ESTIMATOR

4. DISTANCE SENSOR

Hardware Sensors

“Heart of the system“

LIDAR stands for Light Detection And

Ranging.

It is an optical remote sensing technology.

It can measure the distance to, or other

properties of a target by illuminating the

target with light.

Scanning distance of 60 meters (~197 feet)

Lidar

Video Camera

Detects upcoming traffic light.

Distance Sensor

Allow the car to "see" far enough to detect nearby or

upcoming cars or obstacles

Position Estimator

Determines vehicle's location and keeps track of its

movements.

Google Maps and the hardware sensors data are

sent to the AI.

AI then determines:

how fast to accelerate

when to slow down/stop

when to steer the wheel

Goal of AI:

The agent's goal is to take the passenger to its

desired destination safely and legally

Artificial Intelligence

Anti-lock brakes(ABS)

Electronic stability control (ESC)

Cruise control

Lane Departure Warning System

Self Parking

Automated Guided Vehicle Systems

Technologies Used

An ABS generally offers improved vehicle control and decreases

stopping distances on dry and slippery surfaces for many drivers.

Anti-lock brakes System (ABS)

A computerized technology

improves vehicle's stability

by detecting and minimizing

skids.

Automatically applies the

brakes.

Helps to minimize a loss of

control.

ESC compares the driver's

intended direction to the

vehicle's actual direction

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

Cont…..

Cruise control keeps the car at a constant speed by taking overthe throttle of the car.

It also maintain a set distance between it and the car in front ofit

Cruise control

A mechanism designed to

warn a driver when the

vehicle begins to move out

of its lane.

Designed to minimize

accidents by addressing the

main causes of collisions:

driving error, distraction

and drowsiness.

Lane Departure Warning System

System uses sensors all around the car to guide it into a

parallel parking space.

Lexus LS 460 L with Advance Parking Guidance

System.

The driver has to find a parking space,Position the car

next to it, and use the in-cabin navigation screen to tell

the car where it should go.

The parking space needs to be 6 feet (1.8 meters) longer

than the car

Self-parking

As automotive technology matures, more and more

functions of the underlying engine, gearbox etc. are no

longer directly controlled by the driver by mechanical

means.

It is controlled via a computer, which receives instructions

from the driver as inputs and delivers the desired effect by

means of electronic throttle control.

Therefore, the technology for a computer to control all

aspects of a vehicle is well understood.

Automated Guided Vehicle System

Let’s See it in Action !

A look from the inside... A look from the outside...

As of 2014: Nevada

o 1st state to allow driverless vehicles can be legally operated on public roads

6 Google Driverless Carso 5 Toyota Priuso 1 Audi TT

Total milesIn April 2014, the team announced that their vehicles have now logged nearly 700,000 autonomous miles (1.1 million km New PrototypeOn May 28, 2014, Google presented a new prototype of their driverless car that had neither a steering wheel nor pedals.

As on Today !

Managing traffic flow to increase road capacity.

Relieving vehicle occupants from driving allowing them to

concentrate on other tasks or to rest during their journeys.

To avoid accidents .

Increasing roadway capacity by reducing the distances

between cars.

The current location of vehicle can be determine using

global positioning system (G.P.S) .

Advantages

If the vehicle is using internet which is have less

security then From the hackers point of view in some

cases the vehicle can be switched off on the road(in rare

cases)

Hackers can change the rout which is plotted in the

system(in rare cases)

In case of failure of main sensor and backup sensors the

vehicle can create a chance of accident

Disadvantages

The driver less car’s technologies improves vehicle's

stability helps to minimize loss of control.

Driver less cars are designed to minimize accidents by

addressing the main causes of collisions: driving error,

distraction and drowsiness.
