Social media

Keen or reluctant?

Bewildered

Not very interested at

all

Frightened I would say

the wrong thing

I think it's useful, but I think it has limitations.

I'd say keen. I think it's a different way of reaching readers and interacting with them.

Very keen.

“I got my job because I could use Facebook to find case studies.”

Sarah Whyte

Immigration and High Court reporter,

Parliamentary Press Gallery, Canberra

Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

“I’m not a Twitter junkie” – “I have 1800 followers”

James Campbell, State Political Editor, Herald Sun

Ben Doherty, Foreign correspondent, Bangkok, SMH and The Age

Web-based communication

“Skype is safer to use for phone calls because it’s harder for people to intercept.”

James Campbell, State Political Editor, Herald Sun

“I could not have verified the story without GPS to find the location of the environmental damage.”

Donna Page, Investigative Journalist, Newcastle Herald

Reporter collaboration

There is a story that I’m working on the

moment, where a lot of the work I’ve been

having to do is interviewing people in

Germany and Turkey and other places…

Actually, one of our journalists who used to

work here is actually now living in Berlin. And

so he's been assisting me over there.

Media outlet collaboration

Media outlet collaboration:

‘it’s really informal at this stage but

we’re talking at the moment about

making those collaboration links

more formal’ Mandy Squires

Newcastle Herald

“With immigration it’s international by nature with people coming to Australia. I would probably like to do more

collaborations with other organizations in Europe, to get a dialogue between two papers to tackle the immigration issue.”

Sarah Whyte

Immigration reporter, Canberra

The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald
