• People turned to traditional media for the latest news, especially in TV and radio for those who wanted the latest updates.
Once upon a time…
And then…
• At the turn of the millennium, some traditional media outfits introduced their respective online affiliates.
And then…
Once upon a time…
• Personal blogs were merely online diaries or means of expressing opinions.
Once upon a time…
And then…
So…
• The arrival of Rappler in 2012 paved the way for the traditional media outfits to bolster their online affiliates.
• It also paved the way for the arrival of these so-called “standalone” news sites.
So…
And then…
So…• Bloggers began getting invites to certain
product or venue reviews.• Bloggers gained access to events with the same
press privileges as the traditional publications.• Simply put, blogs have slowly become
“independent” online media outfits.• Eventually, some other passionate bloggers and
journos co-founded “indie” news sites.
So…
So…
Challenges
• “What kind of blog is this?”• “Blog lang yung sa’yo.”• “We are just a startup. Theirs is already established.”• “Should we bloggers follow media ethics too?”
Solution to the fourth challenge
• While it’s not a requirement for them to abide with the rules for traditional publications, bloggers should follow media ethics too.
In the end…
• Blogs have indeed emerged as the new wave of news outfits, but aligned with that is the same responsibility the bloggers inherited which was bestowed on the trad media reporters.
