What is Digital Identity?University of Reading (UK) defines ‘Digital Identity’ as:

“the persona an individual presents across all the digital communities in which he or she is represented.”

DI has two parts: What you say/do online (you can control)What others say about you (no control)

What is Social Media?Media is an instrument for communication to you:

newspaper or a radio (one way)

Social media is also a social instrument of communication

Social media is a website that doesn't just give you information, but interacts with you while giving you that information. (ie. Provides a way for you to make comments, vote, recommend, rate, etc.)

Social media is a two way communication tool

Why Are Digital Identity, Social Media and Social Networking Important?

They have changed the way we think about privacy

They are changing the way we communicate

Many employers “google” candidates—what they find determines if you receive an interview

What you do online remains there forever—there is no past history any more

They are becoming a primary recruitment and job search tool

Social media and help or hurt your life, career, relationships, etc.

Changes in Law have not kept up with changes in technology

They are here to stay (in some form)! Within the next few years they will be an expectation
