PATHS NEWSLETTER

PATHS is a Mellon-funded intiative that helps Ph.D. students in the humanities and

humanistic social sciences chart a course toward careers in academia, industry,

Are you curious about what it’s like to build a business with a humanities PhD? Join

PATHS for a conversation with John Paulas (PhD Classics), who is President at PhD

Matters, a consultancy that empowers humanities and social sciences PhDs to make a

change for the better through work in the not-for-profit, public, and private sectors.

Paulas will discuss how he draws upon skills gained from graduate training in his work

with individuals and institutions. Paulas previously worked as a Director of Fellowships

at UC Berkeley and an instructor at Loyola University Chicago and Davidson College.

International

Affairs Career

Trek to New York

City

Info Session: Tuesday, October 8,

UChicago bookstore)

PATHS will lead an International Affairs Career Exploration Trek to New York City on

December 5-6, 2019. Trek participants will meet employers, talk to alumni, learn

about careers, and make connections for future opportunities. Possible trek hosts

include the United Nations, Social Science Research Council, Open Society Foundations,

New York City Mayor's Office for International Affairs, and Médecins Sans Frontières.

Participants will be selected through a competitive process. RSVP in GRAD Gargoyle

to a resource fair and reception to learn

about PATHS (Professional Advancement

and Training for Humanists and Humanistic Social Scientists). Stop by to explore all the

services that the program has to offer. Drinks and appetizers will be provided; faculty

Research Internship,

Logan Center Exhibitions

The Logan Center is hiring an intern to support the

curatorial staff of Logan Center Exhibitions in

organizing a series of major public events and

programs. The internship will focus primarily on The

Ties That Bind, a multi-year research project, public

program, and online platform that explores the

history of Pan-Africanism and its articulation in the

arts and culture of the contemporary African

diaspora. During the spring of 2020, the intern will

support the publications produced by Logan Center Exhibitions. For more details, or to

enhance your graduate school experience? Two such funds are the Academic and

Professional (A&P) Fund and the Social, Culture, and Wellness (SCW) Fund. Many events

qualify for funding, such as an interdisciplinary reading group with lunch provided, a

round-table discussion with a speaker you'd like to bring to campus, or even a movie

night.
