Water Wise Writers

This term, the Doeyuma Class has been learning and investigating ways we can become water wise.

Students investigated the school’s water usage by completing a water audit, finding and recording different leaks around the school and ways we could collect and reuse water.

Students completed the audit by using

iPads to take pictures of the leaks and used them as evidence for their water audit worksheet.

Students recorded how much water was being lost out of two leaks over a one hour period.

These results were then calculated further to determine the volume of water wasted over a seven-day period compared to the amount that each person is allocated to use per day on the island.

The results of this will be used when the local water treatment officer comes into the class to talk about being water wise at home and school.

Students will use their research to write a persuasive letter to our Head of Campus about why it is important to be water wise at school.

On Wednesday 17 February, Waybeni Koey Ngurpay Mudh held our annual Year 12 Badge Ceremony and School Blessing.

This special time in our school calendar recognises the unique and important role of student leaders throughout all year levels at our campus.

It also gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the vital role of traditional owners, elders, families and community leaders in the success of our students.

We were honoured to have Mayor Pedro Stephen and Mayor Fred Gela in attendance, together with many local Councillors and other dignitaries.

Pastor Wilson David opened the ceremony in prayer, and sang with Mrs Margie Cowley for the school blessing.

Mr Milton Savage warmly welcomed us all to Country, and paid tribute to the Kaurareg people’s connection to land and sea.

Ms Mary Bani responded on behalf of parents and encouraged the Year 12 students for the year ahead.

The Australian National Anthem was led a capella by Year 12 student, Pele Savage, and teacher Mr Pierre Wong.

Mr Jeff Waia led an affirmation in Kala Kawa Ya language.

It was great to see the newly appointed School Captains and Vice School Captains fulfilling a key aspect of their new leadership roles as MCs for the ceremony.

The event echoes Tagai State College’s theme for 2016: Lead the Change. I look forward to the emerging leadership opportunities for students at every year level in our secondary school. Stephanie Savage, John Duus, Lindi Chapman, Margie Cowley and Jeff Waia.

Pele Savage and Mr Pierre Wong.

Pre-Prep atNarupay

In Pre-Prep at Narupay Ngurpay Mudh, we have been getting to know each other, our teachers and our classroom. We have been getting use to the routine in the morning when we get to class.

We put our lunch boxes in the fridge, put our hat on the hat stand, put our bags in our bag pigeon hole, stamp our attendance chart, put a sticker in our Yumi folder and then put our towel on

the hook in the bathroom. We can then find an activity in the classroom to do that is our choice.

We have been talking about ourselves, what we look like and the things we like. We have been talking about the colour of our eyes, how tall we are, our favourite colour and our family. We made prints of our hands and feet.

We have been building with blocks,

making things with play dough, putting jigsaw puzzles together, sorting objects into different groups, dressing up and playing in home corner and painting. In the sand pit, we make sand pies. We use the climbing equipment to pretend there are sharks and crocodiles in the water. We love playing with trucks, wheel-barrows, balls, bats, hoops and going down the slippery slide.
