“WHY DO GOOD?”Consider the following:
People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you.
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight.
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, others may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will forget tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may never be good enough.
Give the world the best you have anyway.
You see, in the final analysis it is between you and God.
It was never between you and “them” anyway.
-Mother Theresa

During the COVID-19 Pandemic,Children areat a Greater Risk for Neglect and Abuse
North Judson, IN – Child abuse and neglect is likely on the rise in the face of this pandemic, asfamilies are put under more financial and emotionalstress. Children are no longer in the public eye—they are not at schools or daycare, or in otherlocations where caring individuals would be able tospot signs of abuse and neglect. That is why localchild welfare agencies are sending out an urgentplea to the public to ensure that vulnerable childrendo not go unnoticed during the Indiana Shelter inPlace Order. At Starke County CASA, staff advocates and CASA(Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteersserve as the voice for children in the child welfaresystem who have experienced abuse or neglect. These individuals meet with children in person regu-larly, and provide information to judges to help themmake the most well-informed decisions about eachchild’s best interests. Frequent visits provide anopportunity for advocates to check in on children’ssafety and well-being. But right now, meeting in per-son with the children they advocate for is not possi-ble, making it more challenging to gauge what isgoing on in children’s lives, and their needs. Starke County CASA and other CASA programsthroughout the state and entire country are workingdiligently to ensure children do not fall through thecracks during these unprecedented times. Staff andvolunteers will continue meeting with childrenremotely, filing repots and communicating regularlywith the Department of Child Services. While thesemeasures are still critical, the entire community isneeded to assist in protecting children in their neigh-borhoods.
“The devastating reality is that abuse and neglectis happening behind closed doors right now,” saidChild Advocates CEO Cindy Booth. “ChildAdvocates is preparing for an influx of child abuseand neglect cases and it is vitally important thatevery adult remains vigilant as we weather thisstorm together. Children are counting on us, and formany it could be a life or death matter.”Every adult in the state of Indiana is a mandatedreporter. Be aware of children in your neighborhoodand if you suspect child abuse or neglect, call theIndiana Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at1-800-800-5556
