Framing Tips from the Pros

Check your edges. Scan the entire edge of your frame for potential distractions. Move your camera or subjects as needed to get everything completely in the shot.

Control your background. Anticipate the impact background elements could have on your shot. Change angles or locations to eliminate distractions.

Think in thirds. Imagine lines dividing your frame into a grid. Put your subject(s) either on the intersecting points of two lines or primarily on one line.

Change perspectives. Shoot your subject from way up high or down low to make your footage more lively and fun.

Use natural frames. The frame-within-a-frame technique is one of the easiest ways to make your shots stand out. Look around and see if you can find a window, door frame, archway or even a mirror to put more focus on your subject.

Expand your frame. Create mystery, suspense or drama by letting your subjects’ eye lines go outside the frame.

Break the rules. Remember that videos and photos are an expression of yourself. Look for fun and interesting ways to help others see the world as you do.
