Formation of MineralsFormation of Minerals

• Drill: Name one place you might find minerals. What does this suggest about how they form?

• Objective: SWBAT identify ways minerals can form in order to create a flow chart on mineral formation.

• HW: none.

Mar. 17Mar. 17thth, Formation, Formation

• Drill: Describe one way a mineral can form.

• Objective: SWBAT identify ways minerals can form in order to create a flow chart on mineral formation.

• HW: 2-2 due Friday

Minerals from MetamorphismMinerals from Metamorphism

• Beneath Earth’s surface undergoing extreme heat and pressure.

• EX: Jade, Talc, and Garnet

Minerals from Molten RockMinerals from Molten Rock

Magma cools fast = small crystals

Magma cools slow = large crystals

Ex: Quartz, Felsdspar, Olivine

Minerals from Solution: Hot WaterMinerals from Solution: Hot Water

EX: Silver and Calcite

Minerals From Solutions: Minerals From Solutions: EvaporationEvaporation

Ex: Halite, Salts

Mining for MineralsMining for Minerals

• Drill: What is the difference between iron and iron ore?

• Objective: SWBAT identify methods of mining in order to determine the most efficient method for mining certain minerals.

• HW: 2-2 and 2-3 due Thursday.

Which method to useWhich method to use

• Coal: Usually found in large amounts close to the surface.– Open Pit

• Gravel: Found near structurally unstable overburden (rock not wanted). Found in large quantities.– Strip mine

• Iron: Found deep within the ground near hard, dense rock. Can be found as veins. – Shaft Mine

Identifying MineralsIdentifying Minerals

• Drill: Why do geologists use streaks of minerals to determine true color?

• Objective: SWBAT determine characteristics of minerals in order to identify it.

• HW: 2-2 and 2-3 due Thursday

The mineralsThe minerals

• Minerals 1 & 2 – Pyrite or Chalcopyrite

• Minerals A & B – Topaz or Quartz

• Male and Female– Magnetite or Graphite

• Triangle and Circle– Calcite or Halite

Mining for MineralsMining for Minerals

• Drill: You are planning to mine minerals in an area. Some of the mineral is exposed and most of it lies close to the surface. Which type of mine would you establish

• Objective: SWBAT utilize resources and tests in order to determine the identity of a specimen.

• HW: Identifying Minerals, due Friday

Reviewing MineralsReviewing Minerals

• Drill: Name two ways minerals can form.

• Objective: SWBAT recall basic concepts presented in the unit.

• HW: Study

Mineral TestingMineral Testing

• Drill: List as many disadvantages to selecting the “wrong” type of mine for the mineral.

• Objective: SWBAT utilize test in order to gather and compare information about minerals.

• HW: Study; test Wednesday
