PREPARATION FOR FIRST SESSION

o Read client file or screening information

o Complete the Client Review File sheet

o Investigate characteristics of native language L1 and how it impacts L2 American English ( Google, books, articles)

o Remove “therapy” mindset-clients have differences not a disorder, instruction vs. therapy

o Role-play, model concepts, use dialogues

o Provide many, many, many examples in a variety of contexts

o Use handouts and visual displays (laptop, power points, iPad, pictures)

o Allow adults to self-evaluate and collect their own data; compare results

New Client• Complete clinic paperwork-

provide client with a syllabus and attendance policy

• Make introductions (map)

• Collect a monologue and a conversational sample

• Present interview questions

• Administer portions of POEC

• Assign homework-read article, review websites

Returning Client• Client can initial clinic paperwork

from last semester- give the syllabus & attendance policy

• Make introductions (photo, object)

• Collect a monologue and a conversational sample

• Present interview questions

• Administer pre-therapy assessment measures (rating scale, stimuli from last semester)

• Assign homework

PLAN AGENDA

PROFICIENCY OF ORAL ENGLISH COMMUNICATION (POEC)

• Developed as a non-standardized assessment

• Obtains a general impression of communicative needs

• Examines intonation (see handout), vocabulary, articulation at word and sentence level, grammatical features, contrastive stress, auditory discrimination, and social/pragmatic skills

• Takes about an hour to conduct

• Can be used with clients from different countries

• Provides subtest instructions

• Requires you to make a digital recording of client (Memorex DVD-R)

• Take notes as you administer the test

• Create a relaxed, comfortable environment

• Review administration of the test at least three times

• Use FAM Diagnostic Example to write report

FAM INSTRUCTIONAL SESSION FORMAT• Review homework assignment (5-10 min.)

• Discuss written agenda (5 min.)

• Teach a mini-lesson on a target area (10-15 min.)

• Practice concept taught (guided practice) (5-10 min.)

• Present stimuli as written on the behavior objective ( imitative level, with cues, independently or spontaneously). Collect data at this time. (5-10 minutes)

• Move to another target area and repeat format. (25 min.)

• Complete 2-3 activities in a session

• Assign homework-(5 min.)
