RomeNo place integrates its past into the present quite
like Rome, where history comes to life. Explore the
world’s most famous arena on your sightseeing tour
to the Colosseum. Here, you can almost hear the
stamping feet of the crowds gathered for gladiato-
rial combat. Nearby, the Forum Romanum marks
the former heart of the Roman Empire. Julius Caesar
gave many of his great political speeches there. On
your visit to the Vatican City, marvel at Michelangelo’s
breathtaking ceiling in the Sistine Chapel and look out
for the colorful uniforms of the Swiss Guard, protec-
tors of the Vatican City. Before you say “arrivederci,”
toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure a return
trip to the Eternal City.
Roman ForumRome, Italy
FlorenceFlorence marks the birthplace of the Italian language,
opera and the Renaissance, and works of art like Mi-
chelangelo’s statue of David and Botticelli’s The Birth
of Venus, still reside here today. As you stroll through
the city, pass by classical statues at the Piazza della
Signoria. See the domed cap of the Santa Maria del
Fiore Cathedral, better known as the Duomo, which
dominates the skyline. Opposite the Duomo, look for
the bronzed doors of Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise at
the Baptistry. Walk across the Ponte Vecchio, a Me-
dieval bridge where many of Florence’s famed leather
and gold artisans keep shop. Then, visit a leather work-
shop, the perfect place to fi nd Florentine souvenirs.
Santa Maria CathedralFlorence, Italy
AssisiNestled between Mount Subasio and fi elds of olive
groves on a hill overlooking Umbria, millions visit the
town of Assisi each year to witness outstanding ex-
amples of early Renaissance art and to appreciate
its religious signifi cance. Experience both aspects of
this historical city at the Basilica of St. Francis, where
Giotto’s painted frescoes illustrate the life of one of
Italy’s most beloved saints. Here, the remains of St.
Francis are entombed in a stone crypt above one of
the altars. A local guide will also show you the birth-
place of St. Clare, who founded the Franciscan Order
of Poor Ladies in the year 1212.
