Geography: The study of where

people, places and things are located

and how they relate to each other.

Location: Position on earth’s surface

Relative location – in relation to other places Absolute location – exact location

* (f) latitude - equator = 0

* longitude Prime Meridian = 0

Place Physical characteristics – land forms,

climate, plants, etc.

Human characteristics – religion, ethnicity, transportation, government, etc.

Interaction Between People & Their Environment

~ Adapting to their environment - what people do to survive

~ Examples: heat, AC, clothing, homes, roads, levy, etc.

Region

• unifying characteristics of an area

• Geographical (in a certain location) >>>>>>>>

• Other (language, ethnic group, etc.) Spanish speakers, Kurds, Muslims

Movement: of people, goods & ideas

• Migration – people moving, often to improve their lives (safety, financial gain)

–Emigrate - - moving out of an area–Immigrate - - moving into an area

• Trade – movement of goods–Export - - goods sent out of an area–Import - - goods brought into an area

• Interdependence – dependence of cultures for goods, resources, knowledge, and services from other parts of the world
