often in it and secondly because, while they were making fun of me, it was never nasty and always in a good-natured way,” Sir Cliff said.
But support from commercial radio, particularly in Britain has become increasingly rare for Sir Cliff. The snub is so obvious, that in 2011, digital radio station Absolute Radio 60’s passed down an edict that they would not play any of Sir Cliff’s records as they did not fi t into the ‘cool’ sound espoused by the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who.
At the time, Sir Cliff responded to this by saying, “They’re lying to themselves and they’re lying to the public”.
While he may be bitter about radio effectively killing his recording career, he said he has come to terms with it now and wears
the fact that he has managed to endure in spite of radio, as a badge of honour.
“They really crushed what I was and that was a recording artist – they effectively took away my livelihood,” he said.
“I’m kind of proud now that I have been able to endure... I’ve basically been on a lucky streak for the past 54 years so, for, me that’s all that really matters.”
A t 72 years of age, you could be forgiven for thinking that UK pop music megastar Sir Cliff Richard would want to put his feet up and
enjoy his autumn years. However, Sir Cliff is defi nitely one artist to whom you wouldn’t want to apply the term autumnal to – he is the very epitome of the evergreen artist.
“For me maintaining the energy levels and passion for what I do isn’t really hard because I absolutely love it – so it’s all about eating correctly and exercising because, at the end of the day, I really don’t want to look like some old has-been,” he said.
If the sales of his iconic calendars are anything to go by (his 2011 calendar sold more than four million copies), ‘has-been’ doesn’t even enter into the equation.
After a critically-lauded Australian tour in 2010 with his original and iconic back-up band The Shadows, Sir Cliff will be returning to our shores to prove, once again, that he’s still got it on his ‘Still Reelin’ and Rockin’ tour. Considering though that his fi rst single, ‘Move It’ was released in 1958 and he has since amassed more than 250 million global record sales not to mention 25 Aussie top 10’s, does choosing a set list for a greatest hits show like this prove problematic?
“It really is a nice problem to have... But with a 54-year career, it becomes impossible to do absolutely everything in one night, but what I will say is that people can expect to know absolutely everything – they can expect ‘Devil Woman’, ‘Living Doll’, ‘Move It’, ‘Wired for Sound’, the duet I did with the your lovely Olivia Newton John, ‘Suddenly’, which I’ll be singing with the very talented [‘X-Factor’ contestant] Suzie Furlonger – so everyone will
know absolutely everything.”That’s not to say there won’t be some
surprises. Sir Cliff said he was currently working on a new album of rock and roll standards in Nashville including The Four Voices’ ‘Sealed With A Kiss’, Dion’s ‘Dream Lover’ and Chuck Berry’s ‘Reelin and Rockin’ – all of which are likely to get an airing in the Aussie shows.
“I never, ever thought I’d be doing this for as long as I have. When I was fi rst signed I didn’t think I was going to live to 50, let alone have a 50-year career,” he said.
“I don’t think it was until around 1968 when I released an album with The Shadows called ‘Established ’58’. You see, when we started, we were kind of just written off as being one hit wonders – you know, one of those here today, gone tomorrow outfi ts. Anyway, I was looking at that record and I realised, ‘Wow, I’ve been doing this for 10 years now – maybe I’m not a one hit wonder after all’, I was quite amazed.”
Over the years, Sir Cliff has been the source of a fair bit of both good and not so good natured ribbing for his ultra clean-cut image in the late 60’s – a time when most rockstars were going through their hedonistic or Maharishi phase.
Perhaps the most notable use of Sir Cliff as comedy tool was in the classic UK student comedy ‘The Young Ones’. The show’s would-be anarchist Rik would often espouse his love for all things Cliff Richard; the show borrowed his smash hit of the same name for the opening credits, and he even teamed up with the cast to record a version of his song ‘Living Doll’ to raise money for Comic Relief.

T his year Penrith City Choir is replacing its traditional Christmas production of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ with a performance of music by a range of
French composers, including sacred music composed especially to celebrate the festive season.
This will be a rare opportunity to celebrate the joy of Christmas through an alternative musical experience featuring an ensemble of talented musicians.
Titled ‘Joyeux Noël – A Christmas celebration of the music of France’, theconcert will feature Marc-Antoine
Charpentier’s ‘Messe de Minuit pour Noël’ (Midnight Mass for Christmas) and the music of Berlios, Debussy, Fauré, Menotti and Saint-Saëns.
Conducted by Lucy McAlary, the choir will be accompanied by the Lennox String Quartet, Jane Andino (keyboard), and Liz Strasser and Susan Christie (recorders).
The Lennox String Quartet is a professional and dynamic ensemble
comprised of some of Sydney’s fi nest young string players who are all performance graduates of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky – the U.S. has been invaded and their hometown is the initial target.
Quickly and without warning, the citizens fi nd themselves prisoners and their town under enemy occupation. Determined to fi ght back, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods; banding together to protect one another, liberate their town from its captors, and take back their freedom.
‘Red Dawn’ has not been received particularly well, and one major fl aw is the validity of the plot in 2012. Action sequences are good, and performances are solid, but it’s not a movie to think about too closely. Also starring Josh Hutcherson and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, ‘Red Dawn’ is in cinemas now.

I t’s not every day a new console comes on the market, in fact the world hasn’t seen a new gaming system since the Nintendo Wii was released
in 2006.And now Nintendo are back with their
latest and greatest offering to date – Wii U.The Wii U, which comes out today, is
the fi rst Nintendo console to support high-defi nition graphics, capable of producing video output up to 1080p. The console has been released with two versions: a ‘Basic’ white-coloured version with 8GB of internal storage, and a ‘Deluxe’ black-coloured version with 32GB of storage.
But perhaps the neatest thing about the new Wii is the Wii U GamePad, which features an embedded touchscreen. The touchscreen is used to supplement the main gameplay shown on the television or, with supported games, can allow the player to continue playing games by displaying the main gameplay even when the television is off.
Good news for existing Wii users is that the new Wii U is backwards
A fter leaving fans eagerly waiting for two years, Billboard Award winning singer Ke$ha has now released ‘Warrior’, her second full
length album. Featuring 12 new songs, ‘Warrior’
includes tracks written by Ke$ha herself, as well as Will.i.am, Iggy Pop and more. The singer has stressed that this second album differs strongly from her debut, however, despite the musical evolution that she confesses to have undergone, the album maintains a focus on being fun and comical and is sure to be a party favourite.
The fi rst single from the album ‘Die Young’ has already become a chart topper in Australia, with its infectious electro-pop sound. While Ke$ha describes the single as her favourite, the song has received mixed reviews.
The song ‘Crazy Kids’ is yet to be released, but is sure to generate a lot of excitement from the large fan-base of the Black Eyed Peas, as it was co-written by the band’s front man Will.i.am.
With the album already released in
Australia but yet to be released in the US and UK, Australian listeners will be among the fi rst to decide for themselves whether ‘Warrior’ lives up to her fi rst album ‘Animal’.

T he Independent Liquor Retailers group, which has something like 250 outlets across Australia, has launched its fi rst private label wines that it
whimsically calls The Owl & The Pussycat, and which will target those looking for quality wines in the $10 to $15 price bracket.
They’ve launched with a New Zealand 2011 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and a 2011 Barossa Shiraz.
The Sauvignon Blanc is quite a stand-out at $13.99 and was sourced from fruit from Marlborough’s Awatere sub-region. The distinctive fl int/mineral characters and natural acidity of the region has carried through in the wine, that also displays subtle tropical fruit fl avours, passionfruit notes and lovely lemon/lime characteristics.
They are certainly worth seeking out to enjoy with Italian creamy garlic or tomato-based pasta sauces, or as a foil to spicier
Thai foods. And the Independent Liquor Retailers group says it’s also got a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Sparkling in the pipeline.
One for lunch: The Clare Valley’s Tim Adams and wife Pam have released a 2009 Tempranillo under their Mr Mick label that honours the late Mick Knappstein who for over 50 years made wines at Leasingham Winery that Tim and Pam bought in 2011.
Tempranillo was virtually unknown in Mick’s day, but Tim and Pam have discovered how well-suited it is to the district, producing a full-bodied yet easy-drinking red with smooth tannins, strawberry fl avours and a beautiful hint of spice.
At only $15, far less than many other local Tempranillos, it’s a wine that will go down well at the table with a wide diversity of cuisines – and certainly with the roast turkey if you’re starting to think about what to put on the table on Christmas day.

S ituated on the bustling thoroughfare that is Penrith’s Riley Street, there’s a modern Italian escape that frees you from the hustle and bustle of its
surrounds.When you walk into Sittano’s Bar &
Restaurant the fi rst thing you notice is the trendy modern décor.
Once seated all you really want to do is relax and unwind with a cocktail or wine in your hand but you know that’s impossible because your senses are instantly drawn to the aromas and colours of other diners receiving their meals.
I hadn’t dined at Sittano’s for many years and was thoroughly looking forward to sampling their new and extensive menu. On recommendation of the helpful and friendly wait staff, my dining partner and I couldn’t go past the Mediterranean Dips as an entrée.
We received three dips, Baba Ganoush, garlic dip and roasted capsicum dip, each home-made and absolutely delectable when dipped with Sittano’s own toasted bread.
The pick of the bunch was without a doubt the smooth garlic dip, which was bursting with fl avour and didn’t leave you with that typical garlic after-taste.
After we polished off our delicious dips it was then onto our mains.
I couldn’t go past the Chicken Giggi, which
was served as an unbelievable playground of fl avours for my tastebuds. The tender chicken on my plate was accompanied by freshly cooked king prawns and garlic fi nished in a mozzarella cheese cream sauce. It wasn’t hard to eat every last bite. One thing the dish needed more of were the king prawns. These were without a doubt the tastiest I have ever eaten and I couldn’t get enough of them.
My dining partner opted for the tantalising Seafood Skewers which included king prawns, calamari, scallops and octopus marinated in a basil pesto with chips, salad and the yummiest side of garlic aioli ever.
You would think after making our way through the gorgeous entrée and mains that it would be a stretch to fi t in dessert… well, it wasn’t.
It was recommended we try the Nutella Crepe and passionfruit gelato. They each arrived perfectly presented and tasted as if you were eating a million dollars.
Honestly, if you don’t have time to sit down for a main meal just visit Sittano’s for their incredible dessert range because it will be the highlight of your night without a doubt.

D ecember 3 marks the 20th anniversary of International Day of People with Disability and legally blind artist, Susan Oxenham will be celebrating
with her own art exhibition of artworks that she has created over the years.
International Day of People with Disability is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with a disability and encourages support for their dignity, rights and well-being. It also seeks to increase awareness of the benefi ts of the integration of people with disability in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
“It is sometimes diffi cult for people to appreciate what life is like with a disability, but it is wonderful to receive this annual recognition,” said Ms Oxenham.
The Emu Plains artist has been painting all her life and uses acrylics and mixed media to create beautiful artworks that appeal to both visually impaired and non-visually impaired
people.“I am donating one of my works to the
Special Children’s Christmas Party – a teddy bear that I painted with a hair brush to make it textured like fur,” she said.
Ms Oxenham uses textures to create works that not only look beautiful, but provide a sensory experience for people who are visually impaired.
“It is quite amazing that rather than my work deteriorating, I have improved and grown as an artist,” she said.
Ms Oxenham will also for the fourth time be featured in Vision Australia’s annual calendar with the work featured in that calendar on display at her gallery.
A number of works will be for sale and art enthusiasts can also pick up an order form for Vision Australia’s 2013 Calendar.
Her exhibition in celebration of International Day of People with Disability will be held at her studio located at 6 Barracks Street, Emu Plains on Sunday, December 2 from 12pm to 5pm.

I t’s fair to say after his three-year run on ‘The X-Factor’, Ronan Keating is more Australian these days than Irish. And the man himself is about to embark on a new
national tour with another adopted Aussie and Irishman, Brian McFadden.
Keating will hit Sydney’s State Theatre on Monday, March 4 performing all his hits from his multi-platinum selling albums.
“I can’t wait to play songs from my new album ‘Fires’ to my Australian fans... And to go on tour with one of my best mates is just a bonus,” Keating said.
As a solo artist Ronan Keating has sold more than 25 million records worldwide, alongside 30 million records with Boyzone. Add to this Brian McFadden’s sales of 40 million records worldwide and that’s a serious amount of records the artists have sold between them.
Keating’s soulful pop voice has won him millions of fans around the world and Australia is no exception. As one of the most popular
‘X-Factor’ mentors, he considers Australia a second home.
Apart from his incredible work in Boyzone, he has had an extensive solo career. Keating burst onto the Australia charts in 1999 with the top three smash ‘When You Say Nothing At All’. This was followed with more hits, including ‘Life Is A Rollercoaster’, ‘Lovin’ Each Day’, ‘If Tomorrow Never Comes’ and his latest single ‘Fires’. In 2009, Keating released the poignant ‘Songs For My Mother’, which debuted at number one on the Australian charts.
Brian McFadden is also no stranger to our shores. The former judge on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ got his start through mega boy band Westlife. M atthew Mitcham: “People kept remarking on how they were surprised that a Gold medal and fame hadn’t changed me. I always
responded, ‘Why would I change? Being me is the easiest person to be’. I was lying. It wasn’t”.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Matthew Mitcham made history with an unforgettable dive, scoring perfect 10s, and winning gold for Australia. This was the fi rst time an Australian male diver won gold since 1924.
There was no hint of the harrowing battle this talented young dynamo had fought with clinical depression, self-harm, and his addiction to alcohol and drugs including crystal meth (also known as ‘ice’).
Joyously out and proud, Mitcham was a role model for his courage both in and out of the pool. Yet even after Beijing and ranking number one in the world, beneath that cheeky, fun-loving exterior he was painfully aware of how easily it could unravel.
Unbeknownst to everyone, even those closest to him, Matthew turned to crystal meth as a way of dealing with his personal demons, some of which stemmed from his childhood.
When injury further threatened his London Olympic hopes, he struggled to overcome his addictions, and balance his perfectionism with self-doubt.

T he television world lost one of its greats over the weekend with the death of Larry Hagman. The ‘Dallas’ star made a huge impact on
many people’s lives including myself. I can remember growing up watching Hagman as Major Anthony Nelson in re-runs of the hit 60’s classic ‘I Dream of Jeannie’. It was a little over a year ago when Hagman was last in Australia as part of the Supernova Pop Culture Expo in Sydney. I interviewed Hagman’s co-star Bill Daily and he described Hagman as “dynamite” and “brilliant to work with”. You’ll be missed JR.
More changes at Channel 10 with ‘The Project’ losing its Sunday evening timeslot. ‘The Simpsons’ will return in its place from this weekend.
Channel 10 are set to unleash a brand new comedy with the ‘Wedding Band’ premiering this Wednesday, December 5. The show stars former ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ actor, Brian Austin Green, and follows a group of guys who try to escape the stress and strains of their everyday lives by
performing in a wedding band. The show’s doing really well in the States and should prove a hit for Ten over summer.
Good news for fans of Channel Seven drama ‘Downton Abbey’ because it’s just been renewed for a fourth season in the US. Eight new episodes and a Christmas special have been given the go-ahead. The third series begins in Australia in February.
Channel Nine has renewed ‘Big Brother’ for 2013. The show performed brilliantly in the young demographic market, so it’s no surprise Nine are pressing on with a new season.
US cult show ‘Community’ will soon be less funny after it was announced Chevy Chase was leaving the comedy series. The ‘Christmas Vacation’ star was with the show for three and a half years but was always very critical of the direction the show was going in. Chase’s departure could also spell the end of the show, which has already survived one axing thanks to overwhelming fan support.
One show I can’t get enough of at the moment is Animal Planet series ‘Finding Bigfoot’. The show follows four eccentric but passionate members of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organisation as they desperately search the United States for Bigfoot. Now you probably shouldn’t take this show too seriously but some of the evidence the team come across is quite captivating, and makes you think that perhaps there is a sasquatch (bigfoot) lurking in the woods. Don’t miss it Tuesdays at 8.30pm on the Animal Planet.
Lastly, FOX Sports has just signed a new three-year deal to broadcast the English Premier League. FOX will broadcast 380 games in HD with no ads through to the end of the 2015/16 season.
