The Youth Ministry Task Force is happy to introduce our youth coordinator for the 2015-
2016 school year! David Kamran has been hired as a part-time employee to work with our
middle school and high school aged young people. David is originally from Seattle, WA.
He comes from a diverse family, whose faith has been an important touchstone. Growing
up, David had wonderful experiences in his youth group, and he is passionate about being
a role model for kids and helping our FPC youth have meaningful experiences in their faith
development. David arrived in Lincoln in 2011 when he came to UNL to pursue his
doctorate in clarinet performance. His course work is finished and he is currently working
on his dissertation. David is an amazing musician who has enjoyed playing his clarinet in
worship and for special events here. Now he brings his energy to this new position and is
anxious to form relationships with our young people and their families and start having
some fun! Please welcome David when you see him in church.
Please welcome David Kamran as our

Adult Studies Resume September 13th With four classes on
The Self-deceiving Self: Pharisees and Publicans
Rev. Bob Jeambey will launch this fall’s Adult Studies
amidst informal coffee conviviality in the Rousseau Room
downstairs. Bob will start a series of four class discussions on
the games our minds play when confronted by information that
tells a “hard truth” or that contradicts our beliefs.
He will relate the parable in Luke 18:9-14 to Leon
Festinger’s theory of Cognitive Dissonance. That’s Festinger’s
name for our experience of and reactions to something we’d
rather not hear or that go against our convictions. Four classes
will explore the resulting discomforts and the conscious and
unconscious ways we respond.
Bob has prepared a paper for advance reading for each
lesson. To obtain a copy of the first lesson reading paper via
e-mail contact jrobert20@neb.rr.com or speak to Bob directly
at church or 402-484-6931. (Yes, you can get the papers to read
even if you cannot attend the class.)
Rousseau Room, Sundays, 9:45-10:45, Sept. 13-Oct. 4
with coffee freshly brewed by Ruth.
(The UNL’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) will be
offering again, beginning later in October at FPC, Bob’s
published dissertation on Built-in Differences That Require Yet
Challenge America’s Democracy.)

FOOD FOR LEARNING The Food Bank of Lincoln is concerned about hunger in
children and the Session has approved our church’s participa-
tion in the 2015 FaithFULL Harvest Food Drive. Fourteen
years ago 1 in 10 children in Nebraska was at risk for hunger.
Today, 1 in 5 children in Nebraska are in risk. This is a huge
problem for the community and especially for the faith
communities. The Food Bank of Lincoln has several programs
to address this need. Our church has been involved in one of
these programs, BackPack, for several years. Other programs
include an emergency food pantry in cooperation with Lincoln
Public Schools, and the Student Parent Program. A fourth
program is the Food Markets located in three middle schools
and four high schools. It is this program that the 2015 Faith-
FULL Harvest Food Drive to be held in September will be
targeting.
Representatives of churches in the Lincoln community met
with the Food Bank staff to learn more about the Food Markets.
Once or twice a month food items targeted for youth and
families are put out in the designated middle and high schools
and qualified students are permitted to pick out items to be
taken home to their families.
Churches are being asked to focus on four types of food
items during the month of September: (1) kid-friendly
snacks including pudding cups, Pop Tarts, granola bars
and fruit cups, (2) cereal, (3) peanut butter and jelly and
(4) macaroni and cheese. Items should be in boxes or plastic
containers, no glass. Additional information will be shared in worship and at
various gatherings during September, including worship
services, the opening of the youth program, Presbyterian
Women luncheon on September 13th, and Sand Dollars.
Collection containers will be at the entrances to the chancel on
Sunday mornings, in the Sunday School halls, and in the Office.
Please consider donating items to address child hunger during
the month of September.

— MUSIC —
September 2015/Volume 46, No. 9 5 First Presbyterian Church - “A place to belong!”
On July 12, 2015 I flew out of Lincoln bound for Amster-dam to join-up with 22 other attendees who were registered for the 2015 French Organ Music Seminar. [In the past 20+ years the seminar has expanded to include more than French Organ Music, but the original name continues.] This was my second Seminar, the first being two years ago. The central focus of the tour was to visit tonally unaltered instruments in historic settings and receive instruction in registration and performance practice by inter-nationally recognized organists at each of the sites. For example we visited The Great Church of St. Bavo in Haarlem with Master Classes and playing assistance given by Anton Pauw, organist at the Great Church. Other instructors included Pieter Van Dijk and Frank van Wijk.
During our time in the Netherlands we visited and played eleven instruments dating from c. 1474 at the Grote Kerk in Oosthuizen to c. 1738 at St. Bavokerk in Haarlem. Both Handel and Mozart came to St. Bavo to play what was then the “largest” organ in Europe [almost 100 ranks]. I played a mini-concert at St. Bavo across the noon hour on Friday, July 17 – although the organ is old the keyboards have a modern feel and the instrument is tuned to A 438 - Anton Pauw pulled stops – what fun! Quite by accident my daughter Janna and family were in Haarlem on this date and were able to attend and record the concert. Many of the organs in the Netherlands are still heard in their original mean-tone tuning. A few 18th Century instruments use equal tempera-ment but sound a whole tone sharp or flat when compared to A 440. The compass of both the manual and pedal keyboards can vary in size from instrument to instrument. Also the size of the intervallic spacing is frequently unique to each individual instrument.
In the Netherlands we tried to play music written by early Dutch composers. I played lots of Sweelinck – overall the music never sounded so good although my individual playing went from o.k. to not impressive because I had a terrible time trying to find the right notes. Pieces written in C might sound in Bb or D or C#. Plus the pedal keys were shifted left or right as much as a third higher or lower relative to the players normal position on the organ bench. All keyboard instincts needed a new calibration. The normal octave might be crammed into a space occupied by a 6th on a modern standardized keyboard. The intervals of 2nds and 3rds might be closer together than those of the 6ths or 7ths. Overall the early instruments were tonally enlightening and mechanically humbling.
In the Netherlands I learned: 1. Bikes rule – don’t mess with bikes – they have/take right-
of-way. Be careful not to step in a bike path without looking both ways. Bikes are stored in multi-level parking garages. The land is flat!
2. Trains can take you most anywhere. We stayed at the Ibis Hotel immediately adjacent to the Central Train Station. No need to drive or take a taxi. Wear good walking shoes. Everyone speaks English. The country is ethnically highly diverse – the native Dutch seemed unusually tall and handsome.
3. In the 16th Century and today many of the organs were/are owned and maintained by the town councils, not the churches - because of that, many of the organs were spared following the Reformation – the extremists destroyed anything that looked like it represented theology from Rome – this also happened in France and Switzerland. On Sunday I attended a Dutch Reform
Service at the Utrecht Dom Church. This stark tradition still seems to embody many of the ideals associated with John Calvin. The Service was in Dutch – the singing of Psalms was abundant – to feel like I belonged in the service I sang a lot of open vowels in a country primarily known for consonants. In the Netherlands it is typical for the organs, church towers, roofs and outside walls to be owned by the state – the interior appointments: pews, lecterns, pulpits and hymnals are owned by the church. Many historic churches are closed during the winter months – worship takes place in homes and other smaller spaces. Generally speaking it does not appear that the Netherlands is a church-going country.
4. A typical Dutch organ has 8’ Principals that were built as a two rank stop from middle C upward so that the melody could be heard in the texture. The double rank strengthened the melodic line. A 5 rank Cornet was also provided to solo the melodies. This was especially true following the Reformation when the concept of congregation singing was introduced.
5. There is an ongoing attempt to find creative ways of using the historic worship spaces, such as art galleries, concert halls, farmer’s markets, meeting rooms, town halls, etc.
6. Some churches currently house 3 or 4 organs – the extra organs have been taken from churches that are no longer suitable for housing musical instruments. Most of the historic organs have been restored [many by Flentrop] and are played in well-attended weekly concerts during the summer months.
7. Before judging the likeability of early Dutch organ music first hear it in meantone. It is revealing.
8. Yes, I took the high-speed train from Amsterdam to Paris on July 19 – the same train, a few weeks later, where American Marines on holiday overpowered a “Moroccan” terrorist and earned the French “Legion of Honor”. On my train I noticed only blurred but beautiful cows grazing in the countryside – God is good!
In the next installment I will talk about Paris and the great traditions of Cesar Franck and Aristide Cavaille-Coll.
