How to find a journal article from your reading list

Definitions• Athens:

– the system used to give you access to high-quality online resources that we have bought for you to use.

– You can use Athens wherever you are – at home, at Uni, an internet café, etc.– Username and password is the same as for the computer network.

• Journals:

– Contain articles that discuss current research in very specific areas.– Short, academic ‘magazines’ that come out regularly.– Organised by date, volume and issue number, even when the journal is online.

• Databases:– Large collections of many journals containing many more articles. – Different databases cover different subjects. – They all work slightly differently, but all will have a search box.

The article we’re going to look for:

Javidan, M., Dorfman, P.W., de Luque, M.S., & House, R.J. (2006). In the eye of the beholder: cross-cultural lessons in leadership from project GLOBE. Academy of Management Perspectives. 20 (1), pp. 67-90.

• The title of the journal is always given after the title of the article.

• Click on ‘Electronic Resources’• Click on ‘eJournals’

• Type in the name of the journal

• Then click on ‘Search’ to search the database.

• This will give you a screen with a list of links.

WARNING: the database that this information comes from changes all the time, because we buy new journals, or the journal’s details change.

READ THE TEXT to work out which link you need to click on to get the journal you wanted. If you click the wrong one, hit the ‘back’ button in your browser and pick another.

• The link will tell you which database we hold the journal in.

• Click on that link.

• If you’re on campus, or you’ve already logged into Athens, you’ll be taken straight into the journal home page.

• If not, you’ll be asked to log into Athens…

There are several types of Athens login screen: you can only put your username and password into the one that actually says ‘Middlesex University’ on it.

So, if you see this screen, you need to click ‘Alternative login’ to find the Middlesex login screen.

• You’ll then be asked to identify which organisation you are from:

Click on the little + sign

next to ‘Universities’.

Click on ‘Middlesex University’.

• Now click on ‘Go to Middlesex University Login Page’.

• This is the screen that you can put your username and password into: it’s the same as your computer network login details.

• Once you’ve logged in, you can see the journal’s homepage:

Select the correct year from the list on the right-hand side. In other databases, this list might be somewhere else on the page.

The menu will expand – now click on the volume and issue number that you need.

Scroll down the page, until you see the correct article: in this case, it was called ‘In the Eye of the Beholder…’

Now, click on the title so see more information, or click on ‘PDF Full Text’ to read or print the whole article.

• Now you know these steps, you can apply them to other articles that you’ve been asked to read in this course, and for other courses.

• If you see something that you don’t recognise, don’t panic: read the screen carefully and have a go at finding this answer.
