Bro.Tommy’sVBSTestimony:

InJulyof1969,HighlandBaptistChurchinColumbus,GAwas having Vacation Bible School (VBS)! Iwas a nineyear old boy, almost ten, living in a very poor anddysfunctionalhome. MyMotherandmyDaddywereatthebrinkofdivorce.So,asalastresort,theybothagreedtogotochurch.TheytookallfiveofuskidswiththemtoHighlandBaptistforaSundayMorningWorship.

At thebeginningof the service,amananda lady camedownthecenteraisle“hoopingandhollering”aboutVBS.Theirpromotionwassogoodthatthroughouttheservice,all Icould thinkaboutwasVBS. On thewayhome fromchurch, my youngest brother, Mark, and I convincedMothertotakeusbackthatSundayNightforVBS.

MyVBS teacherwasaBaptistdeacon, J.D.Shehand. Heworked intheBibbMill. Iwas intriguedbyhimbecausehewasmissingacoupleof fingersoneachhand. Ialsothought he was older than dirt. Yet, this VBS teachersharedtheRomansRoadwithabout10to12nineandtenyearoldsboyseveryevening. Bytheendoftheweek,mylittleheartwastendertowardstheWordofGodandtheGospelheshared.

DuringtheweekofVBS, Imemorizedall66booksoftheBible. Ibegantosingandmemorizesongs like“OnwardChristianSoldiers”! OnCommencementNight, IreceivedmyfirstbrandnewBible. ThefollowingSundaywewentto Sunday School for the very first time. Guesswhomyteacherwas?J.D.Shehand!BeforeIleftchurch,IprayedandreceivedChristasmySaviorandLord.

ThankGod forVBSand J.D. Shehandwho inoneweek’stime taughtme tosay“Yes”to Jesusand Igotgloriouslysaved!
