Team Facts & Figures
Colombia came fourth in their only prior campaign, four years ago in Thailand. Excluding the inaugural edition, that ranks as the second-best placing by a debutant team in the competition’s history, eclipsed only by Portugal’s third-place finish in 2000.
Los Cafeteros’ 11-3 victory over Solomon Islands equalled the record for the most goals scored by a debutant team in a Futsal World Cup game, matching Ukraine’s 11-goal haul against Australia in 1996.
The host side reached the final in three of the seven editions staged to date, although the only one that went on to win the title was Brazil in 2008. The Netherlands in 1989 and Spain in 1996 both finished runners-up and their conquerors on each occasion were Brazil. In the other four editions, only Thailand reached the Round of 16, whereas Hong Kong, Guatemala and Chinese Taipei were all knocked out in the opening round.

Team Facts & Figures
This is Panama’s second Futsal World Cup after their maiden appearance four years ago, when they got beyond the
group round before being eliminated in the Round of 16 by the eventual champions Brazil.
During that 2012 campaign, Panama became the only CONCACAF representatives to reach the knockout phase in the
last two editions (the previous team to get that far were USA in 2004). The Central Americans had made the best of
starts with an 8-3 victory over Morocco in their inaugural fixture, which remains their only victory to date in the
competition.
Despite losing 4-0 to Costa Rica in the final of the CONCACAF Futsal Championship 2016, Los Canaleros achieved
their best placing in the event, eclipsing their previous best of third in 2012.

Australia failed to get beyond the first round in all six of their previous participations.
The Futsalroos became the fifth and final AFC representatives to qualify for this year’s Futsal World Cup when they defeated Kyrgyzstan 3-1 in the fifth-place match at the 2016 AFC Futsal Championship.
Australia have avoided defeat in just four out of 18 matches played in the event and faced CONCACAF opposition in three of those encounters, drawing with USA in 1989 before beating Costa Rica in 1992 and Mexico in 2012. The Antipodeans’ only other positive result was a victory over Zimbabwe in 1989.

their ticket to this year’s global showpiece as a European team, whereas 16 years ago they represented the AFC.

Team Facts & Figures
Azerbaijan are the only tournament debutants among the seven European qualifiers, as well as the 14th UEFA side to take part in the Futsal World Cup. The last newcomers from Europe were Serbia in 2012.
After winning their main-round group in the UEFA qualifying competition, Azerbaijan secured their place at Colombia 2016 by overcoming the Netherlands in a play-off over two legs, 5-1 away and 4-4 at home.
This is the first time that an Azeri men’s national side has qualified for the finals of a FIFA competition. In the women’s game, the U-17 team participated in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as hosts.

FIFA Futsal World Cup 2016 Winner’s Trophy
Designer Thomas Fattorini Ltd, Birmingham, UK Robert David Harris
Manufacturer Thomas Fattorini Ltd, Birmingham, UK
Description The FIFA Futsal World Cup Trophy design is directly inspired by the game itself. It involves two teams of five players – represented by the gold and silver bars – who come together on the uniquely shaped Futsal pitch. The curves of the individual bars make reference to the dynamic and controlled passing of a football required on the smaller field of play.
The curved bars support a globe in the shape of a football – a consistent feature amongst almost all of FIFA’s event trophies.

Facts you need to know about the FIFA Futsal World Cup
1
This will be South America’s second time hosting the FIFA Futsal World Cup (previously Brazil in 2008). Asia has previously hosted the event three times (Hong Kong in 1992, Chinese Taipei in 2004 and Thailand in 2012).Europe have staged the event twice (Netherlands in 1989 and Spain in 1996) and North/Central America one time (Guatemala in 2000).
2 Azerbaijan, Mozambique, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are debutants to this year’s tournament.
3
2008 hosts Brazil top the overall attendance record with a total of 292,161 spectators. They are closely followed by Guatemala with 224,038 in 2000 – however taking into account that in Guatemala 2000 only 40 matches were played and in Brazil 2008 56 – the highest average was therefore achieved in Guatemala with 5,601 per game compared to Brazil 2008 with 5,217 per game.
4 43 teams have competed in the history of the Futsal World Cup (not including 2016). Only three teams have participated in all seven editions: Brazil, Spain and Argentina and they have all qualified for the eighth tournament in Colombia 2016.
5 Brazil have dominated the title leader board with five of the seven titles to date: 1989, 1992, 1996, 2008 and 2012. Spain broke the consecutive wins by claiming the two victories in 2000 and 2004.
6 Three matches were decided on penalty shoot-outs, with Brazil being involved each time.
7 Brazils’ Manoel Tobias is the only player to have won the adidas Golden Boot award (top scorer) and the adidas Golden Ball award (best player) twice. All awards were in 1996 and 2000. He is the tournament’s top goalscorer with a record 43 goals across all tournaments.
8 The adidas Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper was introduced in 2008 and went to Brazil’s Tiago and four years later to Italian’s Stefano Mammarella.
9
12 players played both in a FIFA World Cup™ as well as a FIFA Futsal World Cup: Belloumi (ALG), Dolan (CAN), Qi Hong (CHN), Rolando Fonseca (CRC), Brian Laudrup (DEN) and USA’s Agoos, Clavijo, Murray, Ramos, Trittschuh, Vermes and Windischmann. Belloumi, Laudrup and Murray scored in both competitions.
10 Nine referees have directed both matches of the FIFA Futsal World Cup and the FIFA World Cup™: Arppi Filho (BRA), Ponnet (BEL), Silva Arce (CHI), Nielsen (DEN), Vagner (HUN), Italy’s Agnolin and Pairetto, Silva Valente (POR) and Soriano Aladren (ESP).
11 The FIFA Futsal World Cup trophy has been redesigned and will be launched on 24th August 2012. The previous trophy was introduced in Guatemala in 2000 to replace the original trophy of 1989.
12
In the editions from 1989 to 2004 there were 16 teams and 40 matches. This changed in 2008 to 20 teams and 56 matches. As of 2012 there were 24 teams, but fewer matches, 52. There is now only one group stage followed by three knock-out stages (round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals) and the play-off for third place and the final. In 2008 there were four groups of five teams and two group stages which were followed by the semi-finals, play-off for third place and the final.
13 In the inaugural tournament of 1989 in the Netherlands, the matches lasted 50 minutes – two periods of 25 minutes. This was changed for the 1992 edition to 40 minutes (two periods of 20 minutes) of net playing time, introducing the time-keeping.
14
As of 2012 the laws of the game allow nine substitutions compared to previously seven. Given the growing popularity of futsal and the increasing number of competitions, as well as the usual format of competitions with several matches back-to-back, there was a need to allow a greater number of players per match.

History
FIFA identified the potential of futsal by staging the first FIFA Futsal World Cup in the Netherlands in 1989. Excellent technique, speedy reactions and precise passing are as much part of the game of futsal as the special ball and the tight pitch. This attractive and booming sport, which is now played in over 100 countries, poses particular challenges for the players and produces highly skilled players such as Brazil’s Ronaldinho, who subsequently embarked on a stellar career on grass.
To date, the FIFA Futsal World Cup has made three stops in Asia (Hong Kong 1992 & Chinese Taipei 2004 & Thailand 2012), two in Europe (Netherlands 1989 & Spain 1996), one in Central America (Guatemala 2000) and one in South America (Brazil 2008), and with Colombia hosting the upcoming 2016 event, the second time for South America.
Brazil proved to be the dominant force at the first three editions, winning in the Netherlands in 1989, Hong Kong in 1992 and Spain in 1996. At the fourth event in Guatemala in 2000, they were stopped from lifting the trophy a fourth time, when Spain beat them in a thrilling final to become the new FIFA futsal World Cup champions. Spain followed up their first futsal championship title with a second title in 2004, this time pipping Italy at the post. In 2008, Brazil became futsal world champions for the fourth time after a narrow victory before their home crowd over two-time world champions Spain with the same happening again four years later in Thailand, where Brazil won in extra time. There were also fine performances from less established football countries for whom the 5-a-side version offers a welcome opportunity to promote their domestic game and shine in the international spotlight.
