Food  facts

•  2011  -‐  7  billion  people  •  2012  –  c1  billion  people  hungry  •  2050  –  9  billion  people  •  2050  –  world  food  produc:on  increase  of  70-‐100%  (UN)

How  will  we  feed  the    world?

Stop  was8ng  food!

•  A  third  of  food  is  wasted  worldwide    •  N  America  &  Europe  –  half  is  wasted

•  Sa:sfy  the  hungry  3-‐7  :mes  over

•  Developing  countries  –  waste  for  want  of  simple  technology

•  Irriga:on  water  for  food  waste  worldwide  enough  for  domes:c  needs  of  9  billion  people

Put  people  first!

•  Cereals  –  50%  of  human  calories  worldwide

•  Third  of  cereal  harvest  fed  to  livestock  •  100  calories  to  livestock,  30  calories  for  people  •  Grain  feed  –  43  x  more  water  (vs  pasture)

•  Would  feed  3  billion  people

UN  Food  Security  Report

“When  livestock  are  raised  in  intensive  systems,  they  convert  carbohydrates  and  protein  that  might  otherwise  be  eaten  directly  by  humans  and  use  them  to  produce  a  smaller  quan;ty  of  energy  and  protein.    In  these  situa;ons,  livestock  can  be  said  to  reduce  the  food  balance.”

Food  prices

“Increased  demand  for  grains  to  feed  livestock...  is  likely  to  push  future  food  prices  further  beyond  the  limits  of  affordability  for  the  world’s  poorest  people.”

Farm  like  tomorrow  maQers

•  Soil  health,  not  chemicals  &  monoculture

•  Half  global  crop  harvest  –  never  reaches  the  consumer

•  Up  to  a  third  global  fish  catch  –  livestock  feed

In  summary...

•  N  America  &  Europe  –  food  waste  would  end  hunger  3-‐7  :mes  over

•  Grain  fed  to  livestock  –  3  billion  people  •  Half  of  global  crop  harvest  wasted    •  Up  to  a  third  of  fish  fed  to  livestock

Food  sense!

What’s  the  answer?

Food  sense

•  Ruminants  on  pasture

•  Pigs  &  poultry  on  food  waste  and  foraging  •  Mixed  rota:onal  farms

•  Fish  for  people,  not  livestock  •  Avoid  over-‐ea:ng  meat
