Kiawanda Kapers
At the beginning of last summer Maria Williams moved into a guesthouse connected to her daughter’s on the Little Nestucca River. She immediately looked for places to volunteer so she could meet new friends. Luckily we were one of her first stops. And we were so glad.
She immediately started working every Thursday morning on the front desk and assisting with weddings and events. She has been such a hard worker at the weddings.
I really appreciate her and have fun working with her. She is a team player and helps fill in wherever needed. Maria always has such a positive attitude and fits in so well with our family of volunteers. Her and Karri Oeder have declared they are twins.
Maria not only volunteers here but also on Mondays at the hospital in Lincoln City and has volunteered with the Food Pantry and the Christmas Basket programs. She is such an asset to our community.
We are so glad she moved here last summer and this is why Maria Williams is Volunteer of the Month.
If you would like to join our fun family of

From the Desk of your Editor A PLEA FOR VOLUNTEERS!!
I’ve been volunteering down at the Center now for about four months since moving back here from Bend. Being new to the “non-profit” sector has been a real eye-opener as I am finding not all non-profits operate with the same funding.
They can operate with either a big operating budget with paid employees to staff a Welcome Desk and work Events or they have very little funds to operate on, a lot of deferred maintenance, and depend heavily on volunteers to do the majority of the work involved in keeping the Center up and running . . . such as the case with your Kiawanda Community Center.
Not long ago, volunteers worked a wedding event and it took over 103 volunteer hours to make this event happen . . . and that’s just one event which equates to over $1,500 which the Center did not have to pay. There is no funding to convert our volunteer hours to paid hours. It is essential that we have an adequate staff of volunteers to continue providing the necessary resources for holding these revenue generating events along with other services the Center has historically been providing.
Over the past few months, we have had volunteers that have thoroughly enjoyed their job as a volunteer, but due to illness, other obligations or other reasons have had to resign as a volunteer. Your Community Center relies HEAVILY on volunteers to keep it open and work the events; and currently, our volunteers are stretched pretty thin.
We are desperately looking for volunteers to step up and help us fill in at our Welcome Desk and help with events as they come up. Please think about volunteering and helping your community center. If you have questions, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Jody Ferguson, at 503-965-7900.
Thank you.
