• In ArcMap click Adddata button andnavigate toC:\GIS_Workshop\Unguja select theUnguja_Adminshapefile and

CHANGING LAYER SYMBOLYS

• Right click the layer, in the layerproperties dialog, selectsymbology double clickcategories. Set layer sysmbolsto unique values based on theDISTRICT field. On a uniquevalues map, you draw featuresbased on an attribute value orcharacteristic that identifies it.In the map each Districtisdrawn with specific colour.

• Click Add All Values• Uncheck the All other values

Displaying Map Tips

• In the table of contents,right-click the layerUnguja_Admin and clickProperties

• Click the Display tab

• Check show map tips

• Click Fields tab

Zooming the Layer

• Navigate to GIS_Workshop\Unguja\Archiologicalsitesselect Archeological_Sites_Unguja_Arc1960

• You can easily return to your last extent using

• And just as easily return to the zoomed in extentagain with the Go to Next extent button

• The full extent button on the toolbar is very useful

• Navigate toC:\GIS_Workshop\Unguja\ArcgeologicalSites folder and AddArcheological_Sites_Unguja_Arc1960shapefile. This filecontain the pointfeatures taken by GPSshowing thearcheological sites ofZanzibar.

Labeling Features

• Labeling is the process of placing adescriptive text string next to one or morefeatures on your map. Labels help a mapreader interpret a map. How you labelyour maps depends on the type of datayou are displaying, what feature you wantto label, and how you will ultimately usethe map.

• In the table of contents,right click the layer youwant to label and clickproperties in this caseselectArcheological_Sites_Unguja_Arch1960

• Click the Labels tab• Check Label Features• Click the Label Field

dropdown arrow and clickthe filed you want to useas a label select SITE

• Click OK

Creating Hyperlink

• Hyperlinks display documents (eg. Textfiles, images) or web pages accessed overthe internet. You can create hyperlinks asyou browse your map, or store hyperlinksalong with your data using an attributefiled.

• Click the Hyperlink toolon the tools toolbar andclick a feature

Findig Features by Searching withan SQL Expression

• Uncheck label in archeological site layer

• Click Selections and Click Select By Attributes

• Click the Layer dropdown arrow and clickArcheological_Sites_Unguja_Arc1960

• Double-Click a field to add the field name to theexpression box SITE

• Click an operator to add It to the expression

• If you have a very large number of values, clickthe Get Unique Value to see them all

• Double click a value to add it to the expression
