Lessthantwomonthsagothe last ever Estill CountyLadyPatriots6thgradeteamfinished 1st in the seasonand were tournament win-ner,bothforthefirsttimeinschool history. Now, many

of the same players, play-ingundertheirnewmascot,the Lady Engineers havewon the Kentucky Basket-ballAcademy’sFallLeaguechampionship. Coach Shaun Hale and

assistant Brian Riddellcoached the first ever 6thgradeLadyEngineersteam.Estill Patriot coaches wereMike Long, Bob Young,Lori Collins and RuthHughes.

Estilllostthreegamesinseasonplaytofinish7-3andthird in the league behindElkhorn and RockcastleCounty,bothofwhomtheylosttointheregularseason.TwicetoElkhorn.

Butitwasadifferentsto-ryinthepostseasontourna-mentasEstilldefeatedE.J.Hayes, 34-14, and Rock-castle,31-24,togetintothefinals.Inthechampionship,theLadyEngineerswon34-

Coach Brian Hall’s sec-ond Lady E’s team has al-readyhadtheirshareofupsanddownsintheyoungsea-son. Speaking of young, thisteam could be one of theleast experienced in recentmemory. Four freshmanseeregularactionwhilean-choredbyonlythreeseniors,TaylorYoung,SarahBarnes,andSavannahWallace.Al-though inexperienced, thisteam will fight to the end. A season opening winagainst Model gave theLadyEngineerssomeearlymomentum while juniorforward McKenzie Flynnhadagamefortheagesasshepouredin27pointsandpulled down 17 boards tolead the squad to a 63-48win.Juniorfrontcourtmate,SidneyDanyeurhelpedthecausewith5pointsand7re-boundsandfreshmanAme-liaFarmeradded9pointstothetally. Inexperience and youth

would rear their ugly headin the season’s first loss toMagoffinCounty.Anearly18 point hole and 21 turn-overs would spell an Estillloss. Freshman guard Me-gan Bellamy would shootthe lights out with 5 threepointersandateamleading17pointsandfellowfresh-manTaylorDuechlewouldadd 8 points. Danyeur putin 9 points and grabbed 8rebounds. Estill would travel toJacksonCountynexttopar-ticipateinthePRTCClassicandtakeonthehostschool.AhardfoughteffortwouldfalljustshortasEstillwouldlose, 50-47. Senior SarahBarneswouldleadtheteamwith 10 points and Flynnwould gather 14 reboundsforthenight. A trip to Menifee Co.would be up next for theladies and Bellamy wouldhave another nice nightand share scoring honorswith Danyeur as they bothpoured in 18 points. Estillwould hold a seven pointleadatthehalf,buttheturn-over bug (27) would showup again and the Lady E’swould drop this one bythescore67-59.FlynnandDanyeurwouldbothsnatch

11reboundsandsophomoreguard Savannah Brewerwouldadd7points. A long trip toBuckhornwouldfinallyyieldavictoryfor the ladies and stop a 3game losing streak. Dany-eur and Flynn would bothhavehugenightsandseniorTaylor Young would helpthescoringbyputtingin12points on the night. Dany-eur would lead Estill with23pointswhilefindingtimeto grab 8 rebounds. Flynnwouldnotbefarbehindasshe scored 18 and pulleddown9boards. OnSaturday,EstillwouldhostTatesCreekforanafter-noongameandcomeoutontopofthisoneaswellwitha50-40victory.Flynnwouldhave a nice game with 17and 11 and Young wouldadd9points aseightLadyEngineerswouldscratchthescoringcolumn. EstillwilltraveltoRock-castle County on Tuesdaynightasthefirstgameofagirls/boys double header.The Ladies’ next homegamewillbeTuesday,De-cember22asLeslieCountywillcomecallingfora2:30game. loss to East Jessamine andthese guys could easily beover.500. Caleb Bonny leads theteam with a 26.8 ppg av-erage. Eighth grader JoeBentonputsin8pointspergame, Robert Tipton adds7.6pointsand7.6reboundspergame. Michael Abner chips inwith6.8pointsandHunterOsborne gives the team
