Page 14, The Estill County Tribune, December 16, 2015 Less than two months ago the last ever Estill County Lady Patriots 6th grade team finished 1st in the season and were tournament win- ner, both for the first time in school history. Now, many of the same players, play- ing under their new mascot, the Lady Engineers have won the Kentucky Basket- ball Academy’s Fall League championship. Coach Shaun Hale and assistant Brian Riddell coached the first ever 6th grade Lady Engineers team. Estill Patriot coaches were Mike Long, Bob Young, Lori Collins and Ruth Hughes. Estill lost three games in season play to finish 7-3 and third in the league behind Elkhorn and Rockcastle County, both of whom they lost to in the regular season. Twice to Elkhorn. But it was a different sto- ry in the post season tourna- ment as Estill defeated E.J. Hayes, 34-14, and Rock- castle, 31-24, to get into the finals. In the championship, the Lady Engineers won 34- Estill County Lady Engineers -- 2015 KBA Middle School Fall League Champions Left to right, head coach Shaun Hale, Mia Hale, Sarah Baker, Macy Reed, Ava Hale, Tournament MVP Mariah Riddell, Emma Winkle, Mackenzie Miller, Hannah Baker, and assistant coach Brian Riddell. Mia Hale led against E.J. Hayes with 14 points and Mariah Riddell scored 9. Riddell was the top scorer for Estill against Rockcastle with 14. Hale added 9 and Macy Reed scored. Rid- dell popped in 17 points to secure the win against Elk- horn. Hale added 8. Most believe this is the best 6th grade Estill team ever and with a 24-2 record as Lady Patriots and 10-3 in the KBA and named 2015 KBA Middle School Fall League Champion, there’s not much to question. Leestown .........1-9 by MIKE WISEMAN Estill Tribune Sportswriter The 2015-16 edition of the Estill County Lady En- gineers have held their own in the first two weeks of the season with a record of 3 wins and 3 losses. Coach Brian Hall’s sec- ond Lady E’s team has al- ready had their share of ups and downs in the young sea- son. Speaking of young, this team could be one of the least experienced in recent memory. Four freshman see regular action while an- chored by only three seniors, TaylorYoung, Sarah Barnes, and Savannah Wallace. Al- though inexperienced, this team will fight to the end. A season opening win against Model gave the Lady Engineers some early momentum while junior forward McKenzie Flynn had a game for the ages as she poured in 27 points and pulled down 17 boards to lead the squad to a 63-48 win. Junior front court mate, Sidney Danyeur helped the cause with 5 points and 7 re- bounds and freshman Ame- lia Farmer added 9 points to the tally. Inexperience and youth would rear their ugly head in the season’s first loss to Magoffin County. An early 18 point hole and 21 turn- overs would spell an Estill loss. Freshman guard Me- gan Bellamy would shoot the lights out with 5 three pointers and a team leading 17 points and fellow fresh- man Taylor Duechle would add 8 points. Danyeur put in 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Estill would travel to Jackson County next to par- ticipate in the PRTC Classic and take on the host school. A hard fought effort would fall just short as Estill would lose, 50-47. Senior Sarah Barnes would lead the team with 10 points and Flynn would gather 14 rebounds for the night. A trip to Menifee Co. would be up next for the ladies and Bellamy would have another nice night and share scoring honors with Danyeur as they both poured in 18 points. Estill would hold a seven point lead at the half, but the turn- over bug (27) would show up again and the Lady E’s would drop this one by the score 67-59. Flynn and Danyeur would both snatch 11 rebounds and sophomore guard Savannah Brewer would add 7 points. A long trip to Buckhorn would finally yield a victory for the ladies and stop a 3 game losing streak. Dany- eur and Flynn would both have huge nights and senior Taylor Young would help the scoring by putting in 12 points on the night. Dany- eur would lead Estill with 23 points while finding time to grab 8 rebounds. Flynn would not be far behind as she scored 18 and pulled down 9 boards. On Saturday, Estill would host Tates Creek for an after- noon game and come out on top of this one as well with a 50-40 victory. Flynn would have a nice game with 17 and 11 and Young would add 9 points as eight Lady Engineers would scratch the scoring column. Estill will travel to Rock- castle County on Tuesday night as the first game of a girls/boys double header. The Ladies’ next home game will be Tuesday, De- cember 22 as Leslie County will come calling for a 2:30 game. Come out and sup- port the Lady Engineers!!! GO BIG BLUE!!! by MIKE WISEMAN Estill Tribune Sportswriter On Tuesday night, Coach Jon Bentley’s Engineers were searching for their first win of the season against Rockcastle in Mount Ver- non. Their record (0-6) can be deceiving as they have 4 losses by five points or less. Mix in 2 two point losses to Wolfe County and an OT loss to East Jessamine and these guys could easily be over .500. Caleb Bonny leads the team with a 26.8 ppg av- erage. Eighth grader Joe Benton puts in 8 points per game, Robert Tipton adds 7.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Michael Abner chips in with 6.8 points and Hunter Osborne gives the team 3.2 points and 6 rebounds a night. Lane and Andrew Doty score 3.7 and 3.0 re- spectively and Trey Rich- ardson adds 1.3. Come out and support the Estill County Engineers Boys Basketball!!! Their next home game will be a district clash in a double- header with the girls on Fri- day, January 8th against Lee County. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lady Engineers Open Season With 3-3 Record ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Engineers Searching For 1st Win of Season Estill Lady Engineers junior guard Kaley Treadway puts up a shot against the Lady Commodores of Tates Creek as Estill picked up a 50-40 win on Saturday.
