What is an essential question?

• The objective of a lesson written in question form

• Students should be able to answer this question by the end of the lesson

• Two types:– Unit Essential Question– Lesson Essential Question

How do you write lesson essential questions?

Lesson Objective:Students will learn the names

of the beaches at the Jersey Shore.

Lesson Essential Question:What are the names of the

beaches at the Jersey Shore?

Example #1Lesson Objective:Students will learn the names

and some of the characteristics of the Great Lakes.

Lesson Essential Question:What are the names and

characteristics of the Great Lakes?

Example #2Lesson Objective:Students will learn the basic steps

to operating a sailboat.

Lesson Essential Question:How do you operate a sailboat?

Write Lesson Essential Questions for each Objective:

1. Lesson Objective:Students will learn how to

use jet skis properly.

2. Lesson Objective:Students will learn the

basic rules of pool safety.
