Explanation on materials
EVA: The high molecular EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate CO terpolymer) used is a highly flexible polymer and the main component of the homogeneous sealing layer of the roofing and waterproofing membranes EVALON®.
PVC: PVC is the second main component of the membrane.
Fire proofing: The fire proofing consists of aluminium hydroxide.
Ca/Zn stabiliser: The Ca/Zn stabiliser consists of calcium or zink soaps of stearic acid and homologues. It also contains antioxidants and light stabilisers.
Additives: The additives consist of a polyadipate (polymer of an adipic ester), a polyacrylate (polymer of an acrylic ester) and a low-molecular processing aid made of DINP due to production reasons.
Epoxidised soybean oil: The raw material is a natural soybean oil subjected to chemical epoxidation.
Titanium dioxide: The pigment used is a natural, chemically refined mineral.
Carbon black: Carbon black serves as a black pigment.
Backing/self-adhesive coating: The backing consists of polyester fleece. The backing may also comprise a glass fleece and a self-adhesive coating, a so-called solvent-free hot-melt adhesive system (PSA = Pressure Sensitive Adhesive), made of synthetic rubber.
alwitra PUR D: Prepolymers are a substance group representing a reactive interme-diate between monomeric isocyanates and polyurethane polymers. Methyl acetate, ethyl acetate and cyclohexane are organic solvents based on fossil raw materials.
alwitra L40: The organic solvent is crude oil based. The synthetic resin is based on rosin resins.
alwitra SKL wash primer: The organic solvent is crude oil based. The synthetic resin is based on rosin and hydrocarbon resins.
Raw materials production and origin of substances
EVA: The monomeric pre-products ethylene, vinyl acetate and CO are produced from fossil raw materials. The polymerisation process is taking place in closed industrial-scale plants. EVA is imported from the US.
PVC: PVC is the polymerisation product of vinyl chloride, which is produced from ethene and chlorine. Ethene is of fossil raw material origin. Chlorine is a by-product of the chlor-alkali electrolysis of common salt.
Fire proofing: The aluminium hydroxide is produced by caustic soda pulping of bauxite.
Ca/Zn stabiliser: see Explanation on materials
Additives: see Explanation on materials
Soybean oil: Soybeans are mainly grown in North and South America, but also in Italy, Ukraine and other European countries.
Titanium dioxide: The main deposits of titanium dioxide are to be found in North America, Australia, India and Norway.
Carbon black: Carbon black is produced by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons.

Product group Synthetic and elastomeric roofing and waterproofing membrane systems, 09/2010 Issued Declaration holder: alwitra GmbH & Co. 28-12-2010 Declaration number: EPD-ALW-2010111-E
Backing/self-adhesive coating: Polyester is a petroleum product. Frequently, recycling materials (e. g. from PET bottles) are used for production. The synthetic rubber is made from fossil raw materials. Like for standard glass production, for the production of glass fibre, quartz flour, chalk, colemanite and kaoline is used.
The described basic materials (except EVA) originate from Germany and neighbouring countries (Europe).
Regional and overall availability of raw materials
The natural minerals of bauxite, titanium dioxide and common salt are also readily available from deposits in Europe. As is generally known, availability of fossil raw materials is not unlimited. Transportation/delivery of the described raw/basic materials from Europe is carried out with heavy goods vehicles over an average distance of 400 km. EVA is imported from the US by ship and heavy goods vehicles over an average distance of 8,500 km.
3. Product manufacture
Product manufacture
The basic materials and the pre-products (except the backing and the self-adhesive coating) are pre-mixed in a mixing machine and subsequently plastified in an extruder together with the other formulation ingredients. The plastics composition as an intermediate is fed over a mixing mill into a calander, where it is rolled out into a homogeneous roofing or waterproofing membrane; (depending on the membrane type) an underside backing layer is applied. The finished membrane is cooled down over special chill rolls and subsequently cut to its final size and fabricated into rolls. All unbacked production residues (cut-off edge strips) are recycled, i. e. directly refed into the production process.
Health protection Manufacture
Generally, as regards maximum occupational exposure limits the Technical Standard /TGS 900/ (02.2009) is to be observed. No additional health protection measures extending beyond mandatory occupational safety measures for commercial operations are required.
Environmental protection Manufacture
Compliance with the national and system-specific environmental protection requirements during the manufacturing process is guaranteed. Besides, dust emitted while emptying big bags containing powder pre-products (e. g. EVA and PVC) is collected in filters and partially re-used. Emissions produced in the calander are subject to the limits stipulated in the Technical Instructions on Air Pollution Control (TA Luft) and are released to the environment without any filtering.
4. Product Processing
Processing recommendations
Due to their thermoplastic properties the declared products are easy to handle and to process. The overlap welding, in general, is carried out with hot air (warm gas), i. e. without any solvents. With hot air welding on the roof, no specific health protection measures for staff are required.
Homogeneous seam welding is advantageous for a permanent waterproof functionality of the parts/membranes to be connected.
When applying, the pertinent standards and guidelines (e. g. /DIN 18531/, /DIN 18195/ and Technical Rules of the German Roofing Trade Association - Instructions for Flat Roofs) as well as the installation instructions and manufacturer information must be adhered to.

Loose laying under ballast
(advantage: unproblematic removal of sorted material)
- possible with unbacked EVALON®, EVALON® V and EVALON® VG -
The membranes are rolled out on a suitable substrate (clean, even, solid, on a protection layer, if required), aligned and welded in the overlap.
Example: green roofs
The declared products are used for green roofs as a waterproofing and, at the same time, as a protection against root penetration, as a corresponding certificate is available (resistant to root/rhizome penetration according to FLL testing and root resistant according to /DIN EN 13948/) - also without application of biocides.
The vegetation mat and its pertinent components do not constitute part of the LCA.
Mechanical fastening
(advantage: unproblematic removal of sorted material)
- possible with EVALON® V and EVALON® VG -
The membranes are rolled out on a suitable substrate (clean, even, solid, on a protection layer, if required), aligned and usually fastened with approved fastening systems on the supporting structure according to the manufacturer's specification. Usually, the fastening is carried out in the membrane overlap (seam area). After installation of the fasteners, seam overlaps are welded for waterproofing. Fastening can also be carried out off the seam overlap. These fastenings must then be waterproofed according to the system.
With mechanical fastening of the roofing membranes, the complete roof build-up is fixed (incl. thermal insulation, vapour control layer etc.).
The mechanical fastening and its pertinent components do not constitute part of the LCA.
Bonding
(removal of individual layers not optimal)
- possible with EVALON® V, EVALON® VSK and EVALON® VGSK -
If roofing membranes are to be bonded, for environmental reasons, self-adhesive membranes should be applied. The declared roofing and waterproofing membranes are bitumen-free and solvent-free. After rolling out and aligning the membranes on a suitable substrate (clean, even, solid, with wash primer, if required), the release film is removed from one end of the membrane (approx. 80 - 100 mm). The end of the membrane is bonded to the substrate, the release film is pulled out flat to the side from under the membrane and the membrane is simultaneously pressed on (bonded) over the full size with a broom in a single operation. Subsequently, the laps are welded.
Bonding of the declared products can also be carried out with system adhesives. In this case, following the manufacturer's installation instructions is mandatory. On site the Regulations of the Employers' Liability Insurance Associations apply (labour standards and safety regulations).
All respective types of adhesives constitute part of the LCA.
Usage of system adhesives and processing aids
The handling instructions and information on container labels and Safety Data Sheets for adhesives and processing aids such as solvent-welding agent, wash primer or solvent-containing adhesives must be followed, for example
Ensure proper ventilation at the workplace
Keep away ignition sources - no smoking
Using skin protection lotion for preventive skin protection is recommended.

5. In-use conditions
Ingredients Due to the material composition, for the usage period of the declared products no toxic substances (fungicides/biocides) for the elimination of pest biota (fungi, plants, bacteria) or special root control additives (e. g. when used as root-resistant waterproofing) are used in the declared products.
Mutual impacts
Environment - health
The declared roofing and waterproofing membranes have been in use for more than 35 years.
If applied in accordance with the intended use, no negative environmental or health impacts have been reported so far.
Durability In-use conditions
If exposed to standard load, professionally installed and applied in accordance with the intended use in compliance with the generally accepted engineering standards, the declared products can reach a service life of more than 30 years.
If professionally applied under an ecological protection/wearing layer (e. g. green roof) this service life can be still extended.
The in-use conditions will be significantly enhanced when installing with alwitra system parts as the system parts used in the waterproofing such as rainwater outlets, vents, coated metal sheets or rooflights are flashed against the declared membranes in a homogeneous, waterproof connection. As for adjacent constructional elements, additional system parts, e. g. roof edge trim and wall connection profiles complement the product system.
If the waterproofing consists of declared products, it will not be necessary to remove it in case of restoration/refurbishment. In fact, the old waterproofing usually can serve as a substrate for the new refurbishment layer.
6. Singular impacts
Fire Fire performance of the declared products is classified based on /DIN 4102-1/ or /DIN EN 13501-1/.
The declared products are in line with building material class: classification according to /DIN EN 13501-1/, class E For Germany, also classification according to /DIN 4102-1/, class B2 applies. The PVC used in the declared products is a material which due to its high percentage of chlorine burns rather poorly. Most PVC products can be set on fire by intensive external fire load only. When the fire source is removed PVC stops burning, showing so called “self-extinguishing” fire performance.

Product group Synthetic and elastomeric roofing and waterproofing membrane systems, 09/2010 Issued Declaration holder: alwitra GmbH & Co. 28-12-2010 Declaration number: EPD-ALW-2010111-E
Smoke development/smoke density: In case of carbonising, i. e. incomplete incineration of PVC intensified smoke development can be observed. The intensity of the smoke development depends not only on the material, but also on many other ambient factors like oxygen availability, air inlet, etc.
Fumes: In the case of fire, hydrogen chloride gas (hydrochloric acid vapours) is formed; besides, dioxines may develop as well.
Water The functionality of the declared products implies resistance to water impact. If applied in accordance with the intended use, the declared products have sufficient resistance to the impact of water. Water tightness is tested inter alia according to /DIN EN 1928/ .
7. End-of-life phase
Dismantling In case of loose laying or mechanical fastening, sorted dismantling of the declared products after the service life is no problem. In case of bonded application, adhesive residues on the underside of the fleece backing are inevitable.
Re-use and subsequent use
The roofing and waterproofing membranes are not re-used or subsequently used in their genuine form after their service life.
Recycling In case of sorted separation the declared products can be recycled. Collection of the declared products is carried out through the “roofcollect” system. With this, the products are dismantled after their technical service life and transported to recycling partners in special containers (sorted). The recycled materials gained from the old roofing membranes can be reintroduced into the cycle of materials, e. g. usage in inspection walkway tiles. These inspection walkway tiles are used for protecting the waterproofing and marking the maintenance walkways on flat roofs (welded to the waterproofing). The textured surface provides a strong grip, even on sloped and wet areas.
At the end of service life thermal utilisation is also possible. The energy contained in the declared products is recovered, thus saving on additional back-up firing in the waste incineration plant. The energy of 1 kg EVA roofing and waterproofing membrane (e. g. EVALON® V with polyester fleece backing) equals the energy of approx. 0.57 litre of fuel oil.
Disposal / dumping If possible, recycling of the declared products, or at least their thermal utilisation should be used as a way of disposal.
Roofing and waterproofing membrane residues can be disposed of as construction site waste ASN (waste code 17 09 04) as unsorted construction and demolition waste

The components of the fixing options “loosely laid under ballast” (vegetation/gravel) and “mechanically fastened (fastener)” are not taken into account within the LCA. These options are mentioned for distinction between the individual systems only.
System boundaries The LCA considers the following elements of the life cycle of the membranes:
Extraction and supply of basic materials
Transportation of basic materials
Backing, if applicable
Membrane manufacture
Membrane packaging (including transportation of the packing materials and end of life)
Transportation to site
Installation on site (fixing with adhesives and seam welding)
End of life of the membranes (incl. transportation) - recycling and thermal utilisation
1 If the fixing is assessed without further specification, the listed below EVALON® V system is assessed as - mechanically fastened - as well as as - loosely laid under ballast - , since the fastening elements or the ballast are not taken into account within the LCA.

Cut-off criteria In the LCA, all collected operational data, i. e. all raw materials used according to the formulation, the thermal energy used as well as the power consumption and all direct production residues have been taken into account. Also material and energy flows with a percentage of less than 1% have been taken into account. It can be assumed that the neglected processes would have contributed less than 5% to the examined impact categories respectively. The manufacture of the required machines and equipment has been neglected.
Transportation Transportation of the basic materials and the packing materials, transportation to the site as well as end-of-life transportation has been taken into account.
Period under consideration
The period under consideration within the framework of this LCA refers to collected data for 2009.
Background data Basically, background data has been taken form the GaBi 4 database /GaBi 4/. The data is not older than 5 years.
Data quality The used data originates from the data collection performed by the manufacturer. In addition to the primary data on the manufacture of roofing and waterproofing membranes at alwitra GmbH & Co. Klaus Göbel, necessary background data on the used basic materials has been specifically modelled or taken from the GaBi database.
Production data of the manufacturer has been measured or calculated (power consumption, thermal energy, amounts of raw materials used), transport distances, however, have been partly estimated.
For the basic materials of zinc borate and epoxidised soybean oil data sets had to be modelled. This refers also to the adhesives and the wash primer. L 40, PUR D and the wash primer SK-L were modelled according to manufacturer's data and safety data sheets.
Allocation Within the defined system boundaries, in the manufacturing process production data for the product was determined with respect to the overall produced area. During production no further by-products occur.
Thermal utilisation of waste and packing materials
Credits for electricity (German Electricity Mix 2008) and heat (Thermal Energy from Natural Gas Germany) from the thermal utilisation of waste and packing materials in a waste incineration plant have been taken into account.
References on the in-use phase
Use of the roofing and waterproofing membranes is not taken into account in this LCA.
Environmental Product Declaration Roofing and waterproofing membrane system EVALON ® page 16
Product group Synthetic and elastomeric roofing and waterproofing membrane systems, 09/2010 Issued Declaration holder: alwitra GmbH & Co. 28-12-2010 Declaration number: EPD-ALW-2010111-E
Selection of the end-of-life scenario
For the purpose of this LCA, a combination of thermal utilisation and recycling has been assumed and modelled in accordance with the roofing membrane composition for the individual products.
Thermal utilisation implies the disposal in a waste incineration plant resulting in credits for electricity and thermal energy.
Recycling implies inter alia the manufacturing of inspection walkway tiles.
The ratio of subsequent usage is 70% thermal utilisation and 30% recycling. This assumption is based on cost effectiveness of the corresponding utilisation methods.
Credits The substitution approach is applied to the energy generation from thermal utilisation. The quantities of generated electricity and heat are offset against the processes „DE: Electricity Mix PE“ and „DE: Thermal Energy from Natural Gas PE“ (both GaBi 2010). This represents the saved fossil fuels and the respective emissions that would have occurred with conventional energy generation.
Recycling also results in credits. Old roofing membranes are processed into inspection walkway tiles. Credits are based on the materials of the corresponding EVALON® membrane.

Fig. 8‑1: Primary energy requirement (non-renewable) of the EVALON® systems with a thickness of 1.2 mm
The major part of the primary energy consumption results from the basic materials production. As regards the backings, there are hardly any noticeable differences between polyester fleece/glass fleece backing and polyester backing. The consumption for installation with seam welding and fixing depends on the respective option and above all is dominated by the fixing. As regards fastening, the self-adhesive EVALON® VGSK show a lower primary energy requirement than EVALON® VSK because the latter in addition to the self-adhesive coating requires applying a wash primer.

Fig. 8-3: Distribution of non-renewable primary energy
The major part of the primary energy requirement (non-renewable) results from the mineral oil supply. This is also due to the basic materials EVA and PVC which are produced from mineral oil.
The following data describes the renewable primary energy.
The content of the columns corresponds to that of non-renewable primary energy.

Generally, the impact categories are mainly influenced by the manufacture of the basic materials. In particular, this is the case with eutrophication, acidification and the abiotic fossil resource consumption. In the case of ODP, backing and manufacture also play a significant role. This can be attributed to upstream processes and the power consumption.

Fig. 8‑7: Distribution of the global warming potential demonstrated on the example of 1.2 mm thick membranes
As regards GWP raw materials production accounts for at least 50% (there are only minimal differences with 1.5 mm thick membranes). Furthermore, the GWP is the only potential not leading to any credits at the EoL.
As regards the summer smog potential (POCP), the impact pattern significantly depends on the membrane system. With mechanically fastened membranes, but also with self-adhesive membranes with polyester/glass fleece, basic materials production once more takes the dominant part.
With bonded EVALON® V systems, installation accounts for a relevant contribution to the summer smog potential, particularly the system with adhesive L 40. In the case of the self-adhesive EVALON® membrane with polyester fleece, this can be attributed to the wash primer. This also refers to the 1.5 mm thick membranes

As regards abiotic resource consumption of elements, influences on the potential are extremely dependant on the system.
With the unbacked EVALON® and EVALON® V systems, once again the basic materials provide for the major relevant contribution. The same holds good for EVALON® VSK. With EVALON® V PUR D, following basic materials, installation also plays an important role. As regards EVALON® V L 40, installation (zinc oxide content of the adhesive) is the dominant result, contribution of the basic materials is significantly lower. With the EVALON® VG systems, the glass fleece content in the polyester/glass fleece backing is evident.
