Plymouth

• William Bradford & the Pilgrims came over on the Mayflower

• They came to Plymouth to escape religious persecution

• Very religious & family-oriented

• The Pilgrims’ form of government

• They set their own rules and would govern themselves

Pilgrims & Natives

• Native Americans helped the Pilgrims learn…– How to plant crops– Where to fish– How to fertilize the ground with fish

Pilgrims & Natives

• Celebrated the First Thanksgiving together because the Pilgrims were thankful for the bountiful harvest

Massachusetts Bay Colony

• Founded by John Winthrop as a religious colony

• Did very well

• Colony was extremely prepared for life in the New World

Problems in New England

• Dissenters did not agree with everything happening in the colony!– Roger Williams: Wanted the

church to separate from the leadership of the colony

– Anne Hutchinson: Felt people could interpret the Bible without a preacher

Characteristics in New England

• Climate: Cold, snowy• Crops: Corn, wheat, beans, squash• Subsistent Farmers who grew

enough for their families to eat• Turned to the sea for fish and

whales

Life in New England

• Jobs: Farmers, fishermen, traders, forest workers

• Education was valued & parents had to provide education for their children

• Mostly Protestant (Puritan)• Mostly English• Passionate about self-government!
