D. Queen Elizabeth I of England kept the peace, because of political and religious trouble in England and for trade reasons.

SIR FRANCIS DRAKEOF ENGLAND

Sea Dogs – English raiders of the Spanish colonies.

SIR FRANCIS DRAKE - 15721. Two Ships and 73 Men.

2. Drake (of England) raids port cities in the Spanish Main and takes 60,000 lbs. of silver.

Spanish Main: Waters off the northern coast of South America.

3. King Philip II of Spain protests to England.

4. Queen Elizabeth of England stalls and does nothing to Drake.

SIR FRANCIS DRAKE - 15771. Drake plans to raid Spanish port cities on

the west coast of South America.

2. However, he loses all but one of his ships in bad storms.

3. The Golden Hind (Drake’s flagship) he continues and successfully raids the Spanish port cities.

SIR FRANCIS DRAKE - 15774. Galleons (large and powerful Spanish

warships) come after Drake.

5. Drake sails around the world to avoid capture.

6. Upon Drake’s return to England (1780), he is knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

ENGLAND vs. SPAIN (1588)A. The Armada (130 powerful and large ships

in the Spanish Navy) plan to land their army in England.

ENGLAND vs. SPAIN (1588)B. England counters with small quicker

galleons to prevent the Spanish invasion.

C. England blasts with long range cannons and sends burning ships into the Armada.

D. The Armada heads into open waters to the north and loses many ships in the process and storms destroy many more.

ENGLAND vs. SPAIN (1588)E. The heavy losses of the Armada opens the

Americas to other nations (English, French, Dutch, Swedish, etc.).
