What is the danger of e-cigarettes?

• E-cigarettes are new, unregulated and vary greatly.

• Vapor contain toxic chemicals - UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research & Education found chemicals on the Proposition 65 list in mainstream and/or secondhand e-cigarette vapor:

• Acetaldehyde •Lead

• Benzene •Nickel

• Cadmium •Nicotine

• Formaldehyde •N-Nitrosonornicotine

• Isoprene •Toluene

• E-cigarettes do not deliver "pure nicotine" and "harmless water vapor.”

Are e-cigarettes illegal?Is their use restricted?

• Federal law – The FDA does not currently regulate e-

cigarettes.

• California law - prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes to minors. 

• Proposed State Legislation, which would extend State prohibitions

on tobacco use to e-cigarette use, passed in the Senate in May and

died in the Assembly.

• Contra Costa County law – E-cigs are regulated as

tobacco products

Can e-cigarettes be used in schools? No.

• California Education Code 48900(h) – allows suspension

if a student… (h) Possessed or used tobacco, or products

containing tobacco or nicotine products, including, but

not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, miniature cigars, clove

cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, snuff, chew packets, and

betel.

MDUSD Policy

• High School and Alternative Education students found in

violation of the MDUSD tobacco-free policy on any school

campus or school related activity will be required to attend

the Tobacco Education Group (TEG) intervention

program.

Model School Board Policy

• “The School Board prohibits the use of products containing tobacco and/or

nicotine, including, but not limited to, smokeless tobacco, snuff, chew, clove

cigarettes, and electronic nicotine delivery systems, such as

electronic cigarettes, electronic hookahs, and other vapor

emitting devices, with or without nicotine content, that

mimic the use of tobacco products any time, in charter school or

school district-owned or leased buildings, on school or district property, and

in school or district vehicles. However, this section does not prohibit the use

or possession of prescription products, or other cessation aids such as

nicotine patches or nicotine gum. Student use or possession of such

products must conform to laws governing student use and possession of

medications on school property.”

OTHER NEW PRODUCTS

Sticks

• Toothpick-like sticks of ground tobacco.• Approximately 3x more nicotine than a cigarette.• User does not spit.

Strips

• Strips are flat sheets of ground tobacco that work like dissolvable breath strips

• User does not spit

Orbs

• Orbs are pellets of ground tobacco resembling tic-tacs• User does not spit.

Discs

• Several companies have launched chewable nicotine discs or lozenges:• Altria’s Verve is only available in Virginia. Test marketing started in

June 2012.• RJR’s Velo Rounds and Viceroy Flex are being test marketed in

North Carolina.

Ciga Fizz

• Oral powder containing nicotine• Powder poured into mouth,

liquifies and user swishes for 15 seconds and swallows.

• Sold at convenience stores like Circle K and 7-Eleven

• Kid friendly flavors (Raspberry Fizz, Chocolate Fizz and Pink Lemon Drop)

Mini Hookah• Shisha, or hookah tobacco, generally is flavored and

contains nicotine

Synthetic Marijuana – Spice, K2, Scooby, Incense

• User can smoke and still pass a drug test

• Herbs, spices or other plant material sprayed with a chemical compound similar to THC

• Negative Effects -  delirium, confusion, loss of control, lack of pain response, increased agitation, pale skin, seizures, vomiting, profuse sweating, uncontrolled/spastic body movements, elevated blood pressure, heart rate and palpitations.

Marijuana

•No smell, no tar.

•The perfect way to use marijuana!
