It istransmittedthatafterthetragicdefeatsufferedbytheRomansatLakeTrasimeno,theytookrefugeinPerugiaandincreasedtheirpopulation.AfterthefalloftheRomanEmpirePerugia,likemanyothercitiesincentralItalysufferedthebarbarianinvasions.Later,Perugiaacceptedtheprotection of the Pontiffs, but not the lordship. Otherwise, they took Perugia until 1859, when inhabitants ofPerugiaexpelledthepapal legateandestablishedaprovisionalRegencyCommittee.Pius IX troopsresumedthePope'scontrol,butayearlater,onSeptember14th1860,thepeoplefromPerugiajoinedtherestofItaly.LocatedinthenorthofRome,incentralItaly,Perugiaoffersalltheadvantagesofalargecitywithoutsharemetropolitanproblems:thereisanairportthatcanbereachedinlessthan20minutes,trafficisnotintenseandthesearchforparkingisnotspasmodicasinthemetropolis,thanksalsotoamodernoneMinimetrò.Amobileescalatorsystemconnectscarparkstothecitycentre.CharacteristicisthepathoftheescalatorsinsidetheRoccaPaolina,afortressbuiltbetween1540and1543bythewillofPopePaul IIIand,until1860,asymbolofpapalpoweroverthecity.Thevicinityofthevariousfacultiesofthecitycentre,andalsooftheUniversityofPerugia,foundedin1308withthepapalbullofPopeClementV,followedin1355bytheDiplomasofEmperorCharlesIV,auniversitycampusinall respects.Perugia is alsohome to theoldestandmostprestigiousUniversity for foreigners.On theoutskirts,wellservedbypublictransport,istheareaofPiandiMassianowhere,inadditiontothestadiumandtheSportsPalace, there are jogging tracks, skating rinks, slopesbicycles andbasketball fields.
