Environmental Affairs Internship

• Title V Air Permit Review• Air Emission Point Project• Plant Wide Environmental Process Flow Diagram Updates• Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plan

(SPCC) Project• Process and Storm Water Flow Project• Shadowed Suzy Jordan, Environmental Affairs Manager

Projects and Activities

• Title V permit is an operating permit• 154 pages – very diverse with numerous process areas

• Detailed information on air emission sources and control devices

• Specific limitations and conditions• Testing, monitoring, record keeping, reporting requirements to

show compliance

Title V Air Permit Review

• Visited all areas of the chemical plant

• Updated plant wide drawing of air emission points

• Verified emission point locations for the site air model

Air Emission Point Project

• North Carolina Air Toxics Program (1990)

• Established to protect public health

• Regulates 97 toxic air pollutants (TAPs) and establishes acceptable ambient levels (AALs) to limit emissions of air toxics

• Used to confirm adherence to both federal standards and AALs at and beyond the fence line or property boundary, respectively

Why does the site model air emissions?

Emissions SourceLocations Drawing

Emissions Source Location Drawing - Zoomed In

• Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)

• Helps in understanding air permit details

• PFDs in Mill, SPA/Liquids, Sulfuric Acid, Phosphoric Acid

Environmental Process Flow Diagrams

PFD Example

• Part of the EPA’s Emergency Management Program

• Prevent, prepare for, and respond to an oil spill

• Required that all oil containers of 55 gallons or more be listed in the plan and managed accordingly

Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan (SPCC)

• Verified all oil tank locations of 55 gallons or more across plant site

• Worked with Danny Winstead (EA Senior Engineer)

• Created a more detailed SPCC map for the mine area

SPCC Project

SPCC Drawing – Oil Tank Locations

• Environmental Affairs Manager

• 10 employees in the department

• Evaluated areas where new air emission control devices could be implemented

• Meetings with US Coast Guard

• Morehead City Port and Radio Island Visit

Shadowed Suzy Jordan

Morehead City Port and Radio Island

• Gathered information on drainage throughout the plant site

• Created site drainage map

• Plant wide and individual area drawings

• Worked with Danny Winstead, and John Weber (retired Process Superintendent, STF)

Process and Storm Water Flow Project

Plant Wide Drainage Map

Sulfuric Acid Area Water Flow

• Structure of an Air Permit

• Air Quality Engineer responsibilities

• Plant site details (air, water, emergency response)

• The diversity of an Environmental Engineering career

• Acronyms (a lot….)

• Ethics

What I learned…

• Administration and Human Resources Department

• Environmental Affairs Department
