the tongue for any

swelling, ulceration,

coating, or variation in

size, color, or texture

• Note any change in the

pattern of the papillae

• Note any abnormality of mobility or positioning. 

• There are 4 types of 

lingual papillae:

foliate,

circumvallate,

filiform, andfungiform.
