“The computer is an intermediary; it is merely a part of the entire learning process” ( Hartoyo,2006)

Advantages: More interactive aid. As a teacher or tutor. Use to communicate visually. A very effective and efficient reference

book.

“Computer technology will increasingly penetrate all areas of life, including education” ( Ballenden, 1984 )

“ The technology of education and technology of communication are two side of the same coin” ( Maddison, 1983 )

“ The computer can be utilized to enhance language learning, and can also be used to generate examples to illustrate certain operations, or to stimulate conversation” ( Kenning, 1984 )

4 advantages of ICT in language learning1. To support the process of conveying

information and communication2. To serve as the ‘media’ bridging and

enabling the learning process, direct communication

3. To serve as ‘teacher’ or ‘tutor’4. To be an inseparable ‘reference book’

Kenning at al, (1984) states “if combined with other media, such as video, ICT-computer can serve as a peer for students in playing educational games, or as source of learning material, which can give illustration for verbally difficult to explain concepts as well as other interactive and attractive illustrations.

Ahmad et al (1985) also states “it (computer) may communcate with students visually by displaying text, graphics (diagrams, graphs, line drawings) or video images on a screen; it may also present sound, in the form of speech, music, or other audio output...”

Fitzpatrick and Davies (2002) outlined eight ways in which ITC is used in language learning;1. Presentation 2. Practice 3. Authoring 4. Computer-Aided Assesment (CAA)5. Reference 6. Publishing 7. Communication 8. Simulation
