William Chi – SES Volunteer
Year 12 student William Chi, spares no effort in stretching
himself in both his studies and his community involvement.
Joining the State Emergency Service 18 months ago at the age of
16, William considers “helping the community a life goal” and
says “the SES has taught me life skills that will help me expand
my knowledge and give me hands on capabilities”.
William aims to join the NSW Police Force after graduation and
continue his service to the community. Congratulations William!

Principal’s Voice
Achievements in Term 2
showcase Cumberland High
School’s continuous
improvement and commitment
to excellence. We have plunged
into targets aligned to our new
2018 – 2020 school plan and are
delighted with the progress
made thus far.
Report Reflection Conferences
Lifting academic performance is
a key area of focus for our school
and we have introduced
individual report reflection
conferencing to enable this.
Every student will be required to
meet with a staff member after
receiving their report and reflect
on their performance. During
this conference session, every
student will reflect on their
results and with the assistance of
our staff, determine specific
goals to enhance performance in
the Yearly report. Year 12 and
Year 11 conferences occurred
last week with very positive
feedback from both staff and
students. We look forward to
conferences for students in all
other year groups in weeks to
come.
Personal Best, Honour Roll and
Honour Roll Recognition
Breakfast
We recently enjoyed our
Personal Best Assembly, where
students were acknowledged for
their determination and pursuit
of personal best. To further our
acknowledgement of student
excellence and entelechy, we
have introduced this year, the
Honour Roll and the Honour Roll
Recognition Breakfast. For the
Honour Roll Recognition
Breakfast, we invite the top 15
students in each cohort to
celebrate with parents and the
school, their outstanding
Semester 1 academic
achievements. Year 11 and Year
12 Honour Roll students and
parents were delighted to be
given the opportunity to
celebrate their academic
successes. (Please see attached
list of Personal Best, Year 11 and
Year 12 Honour Roll students).
Acceleration Pathway
Our Year 9 Honour Roll students
will be offered the opportunity to
accelerate at the end of this year
and pursue a Year 11 course at
the commencement of 2019. This
will enable Year 9 Honour Roll
students the capacity to complete
one Year 11 subject prior to their
entry into Year 11. Another very
exciting initiative that we are
introducing this year.
2018 Ginko Project
Our Writer in Residence program
with renowned Australian
author, Dr Bernard Cohen was
launched again this year and
continues to grow from strength
to strength. The exciting Ginko
writing project has captured the
interest of all our Year 7
students, in partnership with Dr.
Cohen, James Ruse Agricultural
High School and Carlingford
West Primary School. Students
visited the farm at James Ruse
Agricultural High and were
immersed in the world of farm
animals, sheep shearing,
sustainable farm practices and
the farm hand’s perspective on
working the land. After this
process, students have worked
together with their English
teacher, our teacher-librarian Ms
Alexander and Dr Cohen to craft
their creative writing piece to
reflect their experience. The
works of our students will be
celebrated during Education
Week next term.
Cumberland High School Leo
Club
The Cumberland High School Leo
Club was recognised at the
prestigious 100 Years of Lions
International celebration
Mayoral Civic Reception on 30th
May at the Waterview Function
Centre. The Lord Mayor of
Parramatta, Mr Andrew Wilson
presented our committed and
dynamic Leos with awards in
recognition of their outstanding
community service. Following
this event, our Leos also ran a
fundraising campaign to support
children’s cancer and raised
$289.50 at last week’s barbeque
fundraiser.
Getting It Right Day
Mr Brent Sanders and Mr Luke
Kennedy were two inspiring
keynote presenters that offered
highly valuable insights for our
Year 10 students. This wellbeing
initiative enabled our Year 10
students to engage and reflect
upon challenges and strategies to
conquer those challenges. The
feedback from students again
was extremely positive with
students providing specific
comments about the high

positive impact of this initiative.
The Futures Project
Congratulations to Edison Ruan,
Feng Ye and Isabelle Alley for
their outstanding leadership at
the Futures Project hosted by
The Kings School. These fine
scientists have been
collaborating with other interns
and Science experts on a specific
scientific challenge. Their
presentations at the launch event
was most inspiring.
Athletics Carnival
It has indeed been a most
eventful few weeks since
publishing our last newsletter
and in addition to all the
academic achievements we have
had our annual Athletics
Carnival, allowing our students
to demonstrate their athletic skill
mastery. This year again, we
enjoyed outstanding student
participation and we look
forward to this sporting
excellence shining in our
Wauchope competition later this
term.
Exciting times at Cumberland!

Helmsman Girls
Adventure
The 5-day hike for the Helmsman
Project initiated our persistence
and gave life to many new
friendships. The hike itself,
though it was exhausting for
some, taught us Helmsman Girls,
to stay optimistic and pursue our
goals until the end.
Through simple tasks like
preparing meals and cleaning up,
the Cumberland girls were able
to finally communicate with the
Chester Hill girls and from there,
bonds sprouted and grew. Along
the span of the hike, many
complaints of wanting to go
home were heard and there were
times where we got close to
stopping and giving up all
together yet we didn’t and kept
going, our will and determination
keeping us strong until the end
when those complaints
disappeared completely.
The entire journey had lead us to
realise just how satisfying a
hard-earned success is but also
showed how hard success is to
earn. Overall, this journey was
beyond worth it and everything
learnt, from how to tie knots and
how to set up bivies to
identifying our own values and
climbing through thin cracks
between huge rocks will be
remembered.

the choices I made yesterday’ –

Skills Show
Excursion
On 4th of June, several students
from Year 10 and 11 had the
opportunity to attend the Skills
Show at ICC Sydney. It offered us
an abundance of helpful advice,
including LIVE Q&A with various
Australian VET Ambassador
speakers – all passionate
advocates for careers in trades
and skills and guides leading up
to our career choices in the
future.
The event started with an
informative seminar, followed by
chances to try a few careers and
get information on different
universities along with TAFE.
The seminar provided us with
extended knowledge about
future career choices and
provided an in-depth
understanding of the pathways
and courses we can do; both in
TAFE and in school such as
various types of apprenticeships
and traineeships. Statistics of
how industries are growing
and/or decreasing were also
given. Real life professionals who
studied at TAFE and made a
successful career were
introduced as examples. Some
were interviewed, and they
shared their past experiences,
their passion for the work they
do, how/why they got into TAFE
and how it contributes to their
career. To finish off, a group
known as the AIM (Australian
Institute of Music) performed a
spectacular musical item and
gave us an insight into what they
offer.
Following this was a sort of
‘convention’ in which there were
different career stalls with
various careers, employers and
education providers showing
ways to get into these careers
and what skills they could
possibly require. This included
demonstrations for jobs such as a
brick laying section, a beauty
section and even a VCR section.
Moreover, there were stations of
some different universities which
were giving out information on
how to apply and what kind of
courses they had to offer.
Zashaal and I (Purvi) both had
the opportunity to learn about
the different possibilities TAFE
had to offer for the specific
careers we want to pursue.
Competitions were also being
held at the time and people could
freely come and watch; such as
cooking and fashion designing.
Stations also offered a hands-on
experience, which in our opinion
was excellent as it boosted the
interest of the students
attending. Some stations even
gave out goodies, for instance
power banks, pop-sockets and
more.
Overall, attending the skills
excursion was a spectacular
experience which provided us
with a wide range of helpful
information. We would highly
recommend it to all the future
year 10s and 11s to come, seeing
how extremely helpful and
informative it is for people
thinking about both TAFE and
university. A huge thank you to
Ms. Sisala for organising this and
also Mr. Pillay for helping.

Library News
In order to help students find just
the right book to read, some of
our English classes have
participated in a special “Speed-
Dating” session with selected
library books. (See image right)
Each student was provided with
a booklet to rate their four
minute dates with the different
books. The Books for the dates
were matched to appeal to each
class’s interests and reading
levels.

Mock Trial Round
Three
Congratulations to the
Cumberland High School Mock
Trial team on their 220-215 win
over OLMC.
Team member Dev Chopra (Year
10) said, “Our interactions with
the other team were quite
positive and allowed both teams
to learn from each other and
build their knowledge when it
came to law. Our lack of a
magistrate resulted in Alan
O'Shea and the coaches from
each school in judging us which
made it more of an opportunity
to learn as well. Overall we had a
positive experience and what we
learnt will definitely help us in
future trials”.

STUDY SKILLS HANDBOOK
Do you ever find yourself procrastinating? You
mean to start work on an assignment, but you just
keep putting it off until it ends up being a mad rush
the night before it is due. The Overcoming
Procrastination unit at
www.studyskillshandbook.com.au looks at the
reasons why students procrastinate and what
techniques can be used to overcome this common
problem. Setting work targets with rewards at the
end of each completed step is a well-known
strategy, but an example of a less commonly
known technique is the ‘two-fer’ concept. For this
technique you have two tasks, one you don’t mind
doing and one you have been procrastinating
about. Decide on a set period of time that you will
work for. During this time, if you have any trouble
working on one task or reach a point where you
have a bit of a mental blank, you should then
switch to the other task and alternate between
them. Of course it is better to focus solely on one
task but if this isn’t working by alternating
between two tasks at least you are being
productive for the whole period of time and
forcing yourself to do some work on the less
favoured task.
You might also like to visit the Assignment Skills
unit at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au for some
more ideas on approaching assignments. Our
