A preemie orthotic device to support the development of an infant’s natural head shape

Protectingtheinfant’sbrainisalwaysapriority.Youdoeverythingyoucantoprotecttheinfant’sdevelopingbrain.Now,youcanalsohelptoprotectcranialformation,aswellashead,neck,andspinalalignment,withonepositioningdevice–thepatentedCrownCradle.Positioningofhospitalizedinfantsischallengingduetoseverityofillness,placementofmedicaldevices,caregiverpreferences,and/orlimitedresourcesforimplementingholdinganddevelopmentalplay.Deformationalplagiocephaly(DP),hallmarkedbycranialflattening,earmisalignment,frontalbossing,andfacialasymmetry,canoccurasaresultoflimitedpositioningoptionsonabedsurfacethatisoftentoofirm.DPcannegativelyaffecthospitalizedinfantsintheshort-andlong-term,contributingtoalteredparentalattachment,neurobehavioralproblems, andsocialisolation.StudieshavealsolinkedDPwithgrossandfinemotordelays,communicationdeficits,andvisionandhearingproblems.3

TheCrownCradleisanoninvasive,nonrestrictiveadjustableorthoticdevicethatsupportsdevelopmentofahospitalizedinfant’snaturalhead

shape.TheCrownCradlerelievespressureontheocciput,allowingcranialdevelopmentwithouttheimpactofnegativeexternalforces.Thetwo-partsystemincludesaspecializedmattresswithremovablefoaminsertsthatcomfortablycradletheheadandhelppromoteproperalignmentofthehead,neck,andspine.Thefoamlayeriseasilyremovedandreplacedwithaplugwhenpronepositioningisdesired.StudieshaveshownthattheCrownCradle(referredtointheliteratureastheCranialCup,PlagioCradle,andPOD)mayreducethepotentialimpacttotheinfant’sheadbyredistributingcontactpressure,supportingthecranium,andprovidingapathwayformoresymmetricalskullgrowth.Developedbyneonatalprofessionalscommittedtoadvancingneurodevelopmentalcare,theCrownCradleallowsthebedsidecaregivertoconfidentlypositiontheinfantwhileprovidingproperalignmentofthehead,neck,andspineandsupportinghealthycranialgrowth.
