What does meiosis produce?A. Cells with DNA identical to the parentB. Human body cellsC. Cells with DNA not identical to the

parentD. All plant cells

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONFebruary 2, 2015

What is the driest terrestrialbiome?

Notes

Desert Biome• Driest biome on Earth• Soil contains little organic matter• Large, windblown sand dunes are typical

Climate:Average yearly rainfall: 12 cmAverage yearly temperature: 0° C- 32° C

Plants and animals must be adapted toextreme temperature changes. Desertsare very hot during the day and oftenfreezing at night.

Plants are adapted by their leaves beingsmall and sticker like. This helps them to hold water instead of it evaporatingfrom larger leaves.

Animals adapt by hunting food mostlyat night and burrowing under groundduring the heat of the day. Some animalsHave larger ears so heat can leave themeasily. Thick, tough paws and skin alsohelp protect animals from the extreme heat of the desert sands.

Plants:•Cacti•Mesquite bushes•Small flowering plants•Thorny bushes and shrubs

Animals:•Armadilo Rabbits•Insects Snakes•Kangaroo rats Hawks

Deserts are found in:

•North America•South America•Asia•Africa•Australia

All cells need water toA. ReproduceB. Do their specialized jobC. Undergo photosynthesisD. Undergo chemical reactions

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONFebruary 3, 2015

What is an environmental issue inall grassland biomes?

Grassland biomeFound in temperate and tropical areas of the Earth

Climate:Average yearly precipitation: 50 cm

Average yearly temperature: -35° C – 30° C

Found in:

•North America•South America•Asia•Australia•Africa (where they are called the Savanna)

Plants:Dominantly grassesVERY FEW TREES except in the Savanna

Plants are adapted by having the large, deep root systems of the grasses. Even ifburned to the ground, the grasses cancome back to life.

Animals are adapted to the extremeweather changes.

•Bison Giraffes•Coyotes Lions•Gophers Zebras•Ground squirrels Cheetah•Jack Rabbits•Prairie dogs

Which kingdoms contain organisms thatare all prokaryotes?A. Protist and plantB. Protist and EubacteriaC. Eubacteria and FungusD. Eubacteria and Archeabacteria

ESSENTIAL QUESTION

What is the difference betweenan intertidal zone and anestuary?

SALT WATER (AQUATIC) BIOME

Found around the world

Four kinds:•Deep Ocean•Coral Reefs•Intertidal Zones•Estuaries

Plants and animals must be adapted totheir own part of this biome. For example:

The intertidal zone is the area covered By water at high tide and exposed to the air at low tide. The organisms heremust be able to survive extreme changes in temperature, moisture, and salinity. They must also be able tostand the motion of waves.

Estuaries are formed where rivers meetthe ocean so these areas contain a mixture of fresh and salt water. Salinitychanges as rivers flow in.

Estuaries are known to be extremelyfertile, productive areas because of thenutrients carried in by the rivers. These areas also are nurseries for many oceanorganisms.

The reactants in photosynthesis are:A. Carbon dioxide and oxygenB. Carbon dioxide and glucoseC. Carbon dioxide and waterD. Carbon dioxide and nitrogen

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONFebruary 5, 2015

Name three examples of freshwaterbiomes.

Freshwater biomeFound all over the Earth

There are three kinds:•Rivers and streams (moving)•Lakes and ponds (standing)•Wetlands

Most nutrients that support life wash intofreshwater from the land.

Organisms in Aquatic biomes depend onfor factors for life.

These factors are:Water temperatureAmount of sunlight presentAmounts of dissolved oxygen in the waterAmounts of salt in the water
