I Remember Nothing

“… me in my own world”

“the language we use for illness is vague and centres on scientific medial terms” (Gywn 2001, p.7).

“Progress tomorrow might be embarrassed by the prejudice of today”

• Culture “includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society” (Tylor 1870, p.1).

• William Morris and Alfred Hitchcock gave me a life long passion for Pre-Raphaelite art

and film that pushes the boundaries of storytelling. This is my “autobiographical narrative” (Bruner 1990 cited MacDonald et al 2002, p.10).

• “A person’s identity is not to be found in behaviour, nor . . . in the reactions of others, but in the capacity to keep a particular narrative going” (Giddens cited 1991 Jurecic 2012, p.20); (Gwyn 2001, p.142).

• MacDonald et al (20002,p.5) suggest that music is inherently important to identity creation because of its role as a “fundamental channel of communication” (p.10) and its “social functions” (p.5).

“If you can look into the seeds of time,And say which grain will grow and which will not …”

• “Adolescence … is undoubtedly a period associated with an increasing self-awareness and confidence in one’s identity (MacDonald et al 2002, p.134) and “music is especially prominent during adolescence” (MacDonald et al 2002, p.135) .

• The role of music in the “local, familial and traditional contexts” formation of identity (Laughey 2006, p.204).

• Leisure time need not be spectacular (Laughey 2006, p.220).

“… and she gave away the

secrets of her past”

• I remember this advert because the jingle parodies the song Low Rider, which used to be the opener to a kids’ afternoon radio show that my mum would tape and let me listen to as I fell asleep.

• It also links nicely to the next advert which is honestly the greatest advert ever created, but mostly sticks in my head because it manages to combine music that my parents love, Reggae and music that my parents hate, Bob Dylan.

Onset of Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME).

• “The … phenomenon by which songs trigger the recall of self-defining moments in one’s past is called music-evoked autobiographical memories (MEAMs)” (Blais-Rochette and Miranda 2016, p.26).

• “one of the main reasons young people consider a piece of music meaningful is when it is associated with positive memories” (Lippman and Greenwood 2012 cited Blais-Rochette and Miranda 2016, p.27) .

• “music [does] play a role in the autobiographical memories … across the lifespan” (Bennett 2010, p.258)

• “The musical artefact becomes a key means of preserving and promoting such temporally framed forms of musical interest and attachment” (Bennett 2010, p.258).

• “Why can’t illness just be illness? asks Sontag (1991)” (Gwyn 2001, p.48).

• People often seek a meaning to their illness through their narrative (Gwyn 2001, p.142).

• “A necessary component of the sick role is to not allow oneself to succumb to illness if at all possible” (Gwyn 2001, p.148).
