Minor flooding occurred in Upper Murray waterways late last week following heavy rainfall in the area with totals of 30-70 millimetres being recorded over North East catchments. Further falls are likely until Sunday.

Bushfire projects boost recovery shaping the long-term recovery of Victoria’s bushfire-affected regions,
with the Commonwealth and Victorian governments announcing a $68.6 million fund to drive regional recovery and back key local community projects.
Four North East projects are included in the five bushfire recovery projects given the green light.
Nationals for Victoria, Bridget McKenzie, said the support announced by Minister for Emergency Management, David Littleproud, will help address some of the impacts people are facing following the devastating 2019-20 fires.
“The Upper Murray
was ravaged by this summer’s bushfires and this investment to get started on upgrades to community facilities such as Cudgewa tennis facility and community centre, to help us stay socially connected, active and engaged with one another as we emerge stronger from these difficult times,” Senator McKenzie said.
“This work is locally identified and community led and I can’t wait to see these projects get going.”
Another Upper Murray project to receive funding is re-establishing an Avenue of Honour in Tintaldra to commemorate sacrifice and service in
World War I and resilience during the fires; adding to the $10,000 committed by Border Trust.
Other projects included a pedestrian bridge over the Ovens River and the installation of three large murals at Mount Beauty.
Chair of the Upper Murray Community Recovery Committee, Dominic Sandilands, said “There’s a lot we can achieve with these funds at a local level and we’ve been happy to work closely with government on those decisions, because bushfire-affected communities like ours know what’s needed most.”
Minister Littleproud said the pandemic has made bushfire recovery that much harder but bushfire affected communities have not been forgotten.
“Communities have suffered due to drought, bushfire and now covid and it’s not an easy road but these bushfire recovery projects are a sign that things are moving forward,” he said, “so this announcement will be the first of many.”

Summer is just around the corner and the message from the CFA is clear. The time to start bushfire preparation is now. Cudgewa CFA Captain, Paul Carkeek says the right preparation is the key to saving property and lives in the event of another major event. The seasonal outlook for the 2020/21 season, as per the CFA, shows that above
CFA: the time to prepare is now average winter rainfall has substantially reduced the risk of campaign bushfires in Victoria’s east for the outlook period. While good rain is welcome, this can also lead to greater fuel loads and the risk of late season grass fires.Victoria, along with Spain and California, is one of the most bushfire prone areas in the world and the CFA says it only takes two weeks of hot, dry and windy weather to create
dangerous fire conditions.“Do your preparation early and have a plan,” Paul said. “Now is the time to clean up around your property and reduce your fuel load. Remember there is no guarantee the CFA will be able to defend your property in a large-scale bushfire event.”Over the coming weeks, the CFA is producing a three-step fire plan for the upcoming season to help you prepare
your property, your family, pets, stock, your community and vulnerable residents. It’s a call to action, and it’s time to get started. You can find more detailed information in your Community Recovery Newsletter, out this week, or head to www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare.
Kiwi farmers give generouslyA group of Kiwi farmers and rural service providers have reached out and offered Upper Murray residents a chance to get away and recharge in beautiful New Zealand, when borders reopen again. To qualify you must have been financially or emotionally affected by the summer bushfires and hold or be able to organise a current passport. You will only need your airfare and money for personal expenditure and some meals. The initiative is auspiced and underwritten by AgBiz Assist with the support of Upper Hume Primary Care Partnership. Funding may also be available to help with travel costs. If money is a barrier, support may be available depending on circumstances. For more information, contact Sarah Crosthwaite on 03 5722 2677 or sarah.crosthwaite@awh.org.au. Get ready: Cudgewa CFA Captain Paul Carkeek says despite the current rain,
early preparation is key as fire season approaches.

program is about creating jobs, backing businesses and supporting communities by giving the green light to key local projects,” Minister Littleproud said.
Victorian Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Lisa Neville, added that “We’ve always said that a successful recovery is one that’s shaped and supported by the community and that’s exactly what the Local Economic Recovery program is all about.”
The program is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments through Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
The Victorian government is continuing to support the recovery of the state’s bushland and biodiversity following last summer’s unprecedented bushfires, with a major cash boost for local projects.
Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, has announced funding for 52 projects through the Biodiversity Bushfire

“Let us know what your areas of interest are and what projects you would like to be considered as part of the Corryong recovery plan.”
The CCRC has mailed out a survey to Corryong and district residents seeking their ideas and
comments. The survey also asks residents about their fire preparedness for the coming summer.
Completed forms can be left at the Corryong ost Office or Corryong Neighbourhood Centre.
The survey can also be completed online at www.surveymonkey.com/r /D7LMDYX.
The recently-formed Corryong Community Recovery Committee (CCRC) is seeking ideas and priorities for the district in the wake of last summer’s bushfires.
The CCRC has been formed to give a voice to the broad views and recovery goals of all community members in
Corryong and surrounds and to liaise on their behalf with Towong Shire Council, Bushfire Recovery Victoria, local service organisations and government agencies to address the priorities to ‘future proof’ our community.
Similar recovery committees have been
formed in other locales in the Upper Murray.
The CCRC will provide help to existing community groups and organisations to formalise their priorities and achieve their funding and project goals.

What do you buy a man for his 90th birthday when he has everything he needs? Roy Brown’s family were scratching their heads for that special gift when a couple of his
Birthday brings bird box bonanzagrandchildren, knowing that ‘Pop’ liked birds and the environment, came up with the idea of giving him some bird boxes.
The proposal gathered momentum when it was
identified that many species that do not build nests had lost their breeding habitat in the summer bushfires.
Locally, there were four main species
affected - the Laughing Kookaburra, Crimson Rosella, Spotted Pardalote and Boobook Owl - all requiring different types of boxes.
The Corryong Men’s
Shed came on board and constructed 25 boxes which were given to Roy on Sunday to celebrate his milestone birthday and to distribute to local bird lovers.
The ‘bird box team’ of (from left) Ray Waters, Maurie Foun and Ray Knight with Roy Brown.
Despite pandemic restrictions, The Pong @ The Yong charity event was able to be held last Saturday. Several new players and sponsors came on board and men of all ages played their way through the hours, with generous locals dropping off donations. The ease of online giving allowed people as far away as England to support their friends and it’s not too late to support this local event that has raised more than $30,000 to fight human trafficking. This year’s national goal was $250,000 but Australians’ generosity saw that achieved during a global livestream event in mid-September. The goal was then reset to $350,000 and the total now stands at $276,882 including $4309 from the Corryong event, with more donations promised. The organisers of the Corryong event have also expressed their thanks to Sergeant Liam McMahon of Corryong police for his advice and support, IGA Corryong for donating food to the hungry Pongers and Corryong Health for supplying the table tennis gear.To make a difference today go online to www.pingpongathon.com or phone Craig and Jen Stephens on 0447 495 422.

PaymentJobKeeper28 Mar 2021
The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month.
There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff.
It’s part of our plan to keep business in business, and Australians in jobs.
We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until
28 March 2021.

Fencers brought hope and smiles
Dear Blazeaid (Wendy, Bill and Rob and all volunteers,
Thank you doesn’t seem to be enough to say for what you have done to assist the farming community of the Upper Murray.
We feel we speak for everyone who has had this assistance and support and in many cases still require this help to get back on their feet.
From out of the devastation and gloom of the fires in January wonderful people started arriving to help us. First the Wodonga Belvoir
Letters to the EditorRotary group who started replacing much needed road boundary fences then BlazeAid, Uniting Church and Fencing for Fires with their teams of volunteers arrived offering well needed labour and some materials.
This brought hope to the farmers and much needed friendship. Our community is in debt to you all for your kindness and generosity – especially giving up your warm homes in winter to live in camps!
Throughout this period of adjustment for us all, we have been overwhelmed by the kindness people have shown to us. There are too many to thank
personally but from the state and local government workers down, the counsellors who check up
on us regularly, we have felt supported through this difficult time - thank you to you all.
It will be sad to see the Corryong BlazeAid team leave as they have made a difference in our lives. A sincere and heartfelt thanks for being here for us all.
It is wonderful that two new BlazeAid camps are set up at Walwa and Jingellic to continue working on replacement fencing – particularly on
some of the steep and challenging country.
Spring has brought some well needed rain which also gives hope to the farming community to see green pastures.
Best wishes to the teams that are leaving – we appreciate everything you have done for us in the beautiful Upper Murray. Come back someday and visit us.
Neil and Marilyn Clydsdale,
Tintaldra.

Our world is continually changing and it’s hard to imagine life without some form of technology in it.
However, it can be confusing, fast changing and sometimes hard to determine what the right type of technology is for you.
Should I get an ipad? What is the difference between and ipad and an iphone?
Do I need to buy something expensive to meet my needs? What can all these devices be used
Help is at hand to test drive technologyfor?
The Corryong Neighbourhood Centre (CNC) can help answer those questions and give people the confidence to achieve what they want using the latest technology.
“All too often, community members will come in to see us with a brand-new piece of technology that doesn’t meet their needs or is more complex and/or expensive than it needs to be,” said Errol Obran, from the CNC.
“We are available to give people information about different devices, what they can be used for and answer any questions they have about making the decision to purchase a new one.
“We are inviting community members to come in to the CNC on Wednesday October 21 from 1pm for a test drive.
“There will be a range of devices available to test out and get comfortable with, as well as staff to provide assistance,” Erroll said.

Timber plan labelled a jokeTimber businesses with
innovative ideas about using plantation timber and transforming operations away from native timber will be supported with grants from the Victorian government but a local mill owner has rejected the initiative.
Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development, Jaclyn Symes, launched the Timber Innovation Grants last week, which will offer up to $100,000 to help timber mills and harvest and haulage businesses explore shift-ing to plantation fibre or other manufacturing opportunities.
“The grants can help timber businesses take an early step towards new lines of business
or a different operating model,” Ms Symes said.
“To support forestry and manufacturing jobs over the coming decades, new approaches need to be embraced to take advantage of available timber in the future.
Several timber mills and harvest and haulage businesses have already taken up transition vouchers to have a diagnostic assessment of their businesses.
However, Corryong mill owner, Graham Walker, said the $100,000 transition grants were “a joke” given that a new multi-saw costs more than $1 million.
He added that it would cost up to $3 million to re-tool the Corryong mill for softwood production.
Graham Walker (middle) has called out the state government on new funding.
After being closed since the summer bushfires, the Corryong Op Shop committee has been working hard behind the scenes during the
Op shop gears up for openinglockdown in prepration for its re-opening.
“Firstly, we would like to introduce and welcome our new co-ordinator, Susanna Hamaleinen, to the team,” said committee member Melissa White-head.
“Susanna will be working on a casual basis with the committee and volunteers to make our op shop even better than before.
“She has been working on reviewing and updating all procedures and protocols, so we now have documented OHS policies for volunteer safety and a great new induction program for both existing and new volunteers to ensure we are all on the same page.
“Thanks to a grant from Towong Shire Council, we also will be able to install non-contact point-of-sale hardware and will be looking to upgrade the interior of the shop as and when we can.”
The other missing
ingredient are the volunteers who man the shop.
“We will be getting in touch with all our regular volunteers and would love to hear from anyone in the community who would be interested in helping out,” Melissa said.
“The op shop committee is made up of members of the three parent clubs in Corryong
- Corryong Kindergarten, Corryong College and Sacred Heart Catholic School. We work hard to ensure the shop is as successful as we can and all funds go to the schools to purchase items.
“What better reason to help out a community organisation, than the future of the community, our kids?
Shifts in the op shop
can be as regular as you can manage. Hours are generally from 10am to 12.30pm or from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.
Any interested persons can contact Susanna on 0459 991 884 or email opshopcorryong@gmail.com.
“We can’t wait to hear from you and get our little shop back up and running!” Melissa added.
The wet weather stopped us from bowling last week but with fine weather coming up we’ll get going this week.
Social bowls has been held yesterday and today and there may also be bowls on Saturday and or Sunday – depending on numbers.
New members are very
welcome - for enquiries phone 6076 1363.
We are having our official opening on Sunday 18th October, starting with a few formalities at 1pm then some bowling, followed by afternoon tea. Names in to play by 12.30 please.
Preceding the formalities we will have
a very short meeting to formally elect office-bearers.
Opening Day will be held regardless of the weather. We can still have the formalities and afternoon tea even if it’s raining. Members are asked to wear uniform and please bring a plate.
