1 Read the text and underline all the words that begin with f.
You don’t have to be a professional paleontologist to collect fossils. Anybody can do it. All you need is some basic information, a good place, and a lot of patience. Just follow these suggestions:
Check what kind of rocks you need to fi nd. Most fossils hide in sedimentary rock. This forms when tiny bits of rocks and minerals join together over millions of years. Plants and animals between layers of sediment become fossils.
Look for fossils in places where wind and water erosion expose old rock.
Wrap your fossils in toilet paper. Then use plastic bags to protect them. A backpack is a good place to keep your fossils.
Use a pen to write notes about your adventures in a little notebook.
So you are ready to go fossil hunting. Make sure that you go to a placewhere it is OK to collect fossils. Check with an adult if you’re not sure. Remember: never go alone or into dangerous areas.
Mark ( or ) each sentence.
1. Only professional paleontologists find fossils.
2. Rocks and minerals cover fossils.
3. Very old plants and animals are fossils.
4. You can’t protect fossils.

Aesop and His Master Aesop and His Fables Aesop the Comedy Writer
Aesop was a Greek storyteller. He lived around 2,500 years ago. Some say he was a slave.
His master liked his stories so much that he decidedto give Aesop his freedom. The Greeks were like that: they appreciated talent.
There are no records to prove that Aesop ever wrote anything down. Fortunately, many years after his death, people started to write down these fables to share them easily. Now you can find adaptations of Aesop’s fables, many of them illustrated, and translated into almost every language. We all enjoy these wonderful stories today—fables created a long time ago!

The ancient Greeks were a very organized society. Everybody had specifi c tasks. Men spent a lot of time away from home. They were sailors, hunters, businessmen, government offi cials or farmers. For fun, the men enjoyed parties, wrestling,
horseback riding, and the famous Olympic Games. Parties were only for men. Women did not participate in parties or in the Olympic Games because the athletes did not wear clothes.Greek women were in charge of the household. Their job was also to make
the clothes and take care of their children. These women did not do housework. Their slaves did it. Greek women participated in social events only with their husbands’ permission. The ancient Greeks considered that children became adults when they
were thirty years old! Greek girls stayed at home until married. Their job was to help their mother and, sometimes, to help in the fi elds. Greek boys stayed at home, helping in the fi elds, sailing, and fi shing. They went to school when they were six or seven years old.

Tsunamis
Tsunamis
1. What language does the word tsunami come from?
2. What causes a tsunami?
3. How high can tsunami waves be?
4. What caused the tsunami in Samoa in 2009?
5. Where is Samoa?
Answer True or False.
1. A tsunami is one huge wave.
2. In a tsunami, waves travel in all directions.
3. All tsunami waves travel at 8 km/h.
4. Tsunami waves are bigger when they are close to the beach.
5. Nobody died in the tsunami in Samoa in 2009.
The word tsunami comes from two Japanese
words: tsu, which means “harbor,” and nami, which means “wave.” A tsunami isa series of huge waves. It happens after there is movement of the earth under the sea—because of an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, or the impact of a large meteorite. It is similar to what happens when you throw a rock in the water: the waves travel in all directions. In a tsunami, the waves can travel as fast as 800 km/h. The big waves grow when they are closer to the beach. They can be as high as 30 m. They can destroy buildings and houses.
On September 29, 2009, an earthquake caused a tsunami on the islands of Samoa. Samoa is in the Pacifi c Ocean, between New Zealand and Hawaii.
The tsunami destroyed many villages and a lot of people died. Do you remember this or other tsunamis?

5. Humans can’t make greenhouse gases.
6. Global warming burns fossil fuels.
The Greenhouse Effect
Do you know what a greenhouse is? It looks like a small glass house. Greenhouses are used
to grow plants, especially in the winter. The glass panels let in light but do not let heat escape. This keeps the plants warm enough to live in the winter.
On Earth, the gases in the atmosphere work
like a greenhouse. They collect solar energy and make the planet warm. Some rays escape and go back into space. Without the greenhouse gases, the Earth would be very cold. Greenhouse gases are good in small quantities. In large quantities, the Earth becomes too warm.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas.
Humans create it when power plants, cars, trucks and airplanes burn fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas). More CO2 means that the atmosphere collects
more energy from the sun. This makes the
temperature of our planet go up: global warming.

Health1 Read and mark ( ) your answers.1
It is important to take care of our planet, but it is good to take care of our bodies too. You probably have a lot of activities: school, taking care of your pets, running around with friends, going to sports practice or other activities and doing your homework. By the end of the day, your body needs a break. Sleep helps your body and brain rest for the next day. You need 10 to 11 hours a night, but most kids sleep only about 9.5 hours. This is a problem.Almost everything that is alive needs sleep to survive. Even your dog or cat takes naps. Animals sleep for the same reason you do—to give their body a tiny vacation. Choose which one needs more sleep—the child or the animal.

1. Only some people have rhythm.
2. We can listen to music when we are babies.
3. Music helps a person feel relaxed.
Read and check your answers.
Color the squares to create a song.
Tap the song using your musical jars.
Are you good at dancing? Does your body move independently
when you listen to a song? Or is it diffi cult for you to
follow the
rhythm of music? The truth is that we all have rhythm.
We sense music before we are born. We listen to the rhythm of
our mom’s heartbeat. This explains why you can feel more relaxed
and less stressed when you listen to music that has about 72 be
ats
per minute. Rhythm also brings people together. It is a good idea
to go to a rock concert, or to a dance, or to go see
a parade. You
will clap, stamp and connect with everyone there.
I Have Rhythm!
2 Follow the instructions.
Now it’s your turn to be creative! You’ll need:
Place the jars in a row. Drop some food coloring into the jars. Fill the first jar with water almost to the top. Fill the second jar with a little less water. Continue with the other jars. Tap each jar lightly with the spoon. Check that each jar makes a different sound! Don’t be shy—compose your own songs following different color patterns. For example: red, red, blue, yellow, yellow, blue. Remember, we all have a rhythm of our own!

6. Its tail is made of dust and gas.
Comets are part
of the solar system. They
orbit the sun. Part of a comet’s
orbit is very, very far from the sun, and part is close to it. All comets have a center, or nucleus. It is like a ball made of ice and dust. When the comet gets closer to the sun, some of the ice and dust starts to melt, like
an ice cube close to a hot object. We see the particles and gases on a
cloud called a coma. It forms a tail.
NASA scientists recently discovered that a really fast star can form a tail, just like a comet. Mira is a star that scientists have studied for 400 years. NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer telescope captured a very surprising image of Mira: it showed for the fi rst time that it has a long tail of dust and gas—

In summary, Pluto is not a planet. It’s a dwarf planet
because it is very small and there are other large
objects near to it.
2 Match the headings with the appropriate parts of the article.
Why Isn’t Pluto a Planet Anymore?
People started discovering planets hundreds of years ago. They called them planets, which refers to the way they travel across the sky. A scientist named Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930. It took a long time to fi nd it because it’s very small and it’s very far away – you can only see it with a large telescope.
Write what each number refers to.
1930

2006
Pluto is very far from the sun. Sometimes it is 7.4
billion kilometers away from the sun. That’s 39 times
the distance between Earth and the sun. Its average
temperature is -230 degrees Celsius, and its day is
more than 6 Earth days long. It is only 1/5 of the size
of Earth’s moon. In addition, scientists discovered that
Pluto is part of an asteroid belt – a fi eld of rocks and
debris that orbits the sun from very far away. There
are other large rocks similar to Pluto: Ceres, Eris,
Makemake and Haumea are the primary examples.
In 2006, scientists agreed to call Pluto and these other
objects dwarf planets.

he Mayans had a number system consisting of shells, dots, and bars. You could write the numbers up to 19 with just these symbols. The Mayan people were
one of the only ancient civilizations that understood the concept of zero. So it was possible for them to write very large numbers. Instead of ten digits as we have today, the Mayans used a base number of 20. A dot symbolized the number 1, and a bar, 5. In the following table, you can see how this works.

1. Overweight children can develop diabetes.
2. You should exercise regularly to be healthy.
3. Kids should exercise at least 20 minutes every day.
4. An average kid watches television for an hour a day.
5. Swimming is better for you than basketball.
6. You don’t need to exercise to be active.

Add two more activities that can keep you active.
Overweight kids can develop serious health problems like diabetes, asthma, and high
blood pressure. Exercising is one
of the most important
ways to keep your body
healthy. Your muscles, bones
and heart get stronger when you exercise. You also burn excess fat and feel better. Kids should exercise at least one hour a day, but many don’t get enough exercise. The average kid spends about three hours a day watching television and three more hours sitting down, often playing video games or surfi ng the
Internet. Does this sound like you? If it does, you should get up and get moving! Soccer, swimming, biking, and basketball are great ways to stay in shape. But there are many other ways to get active. Be creative and fi nd your own way to have fun.

Why did the puppy eat the lunch?
It was my birthday yesterday, so my
grandparents gave me a puppy. In the afternoon, he was very hungry, so
he ate my dad’s lunch! My dad was very angry. After that, the puppy
chewed my sister’s favorite shoes. He just wanted to play! She was very upset, and she cried. When I went to bed, my puppy was crying.I knew he felt lonely, so we played all night. I didn’t sleep, and I feel
very tired now.

2 Read and answer the questions.
Teenagers and sports are an incredibly healthy mix. Physical activity has amazing benefi ts for both mind and body. So why not get off that couch and onto the playing fi eld this summer?
Doing activities in groups is fun, and sports are no exception. Team sports help develop strength and coordination; they also build leadership and other social skills. In addition, team sports are a great way to learn to manage stress better. The most popular team sports for teenagers are football, volleyball, and basketball.
If you don’t like the idea of joining a team, there are other sports for individual participation. These sports are a good option if you prefer to progress at your own pace. Life sports give you the physical workout your body needs regularly. They include swimming, squash, gymnastics, karate, and skateboarding.
It doesn’t matter whether you choose a team sport or a life sport. The key is to fi nd a sport that interests you. It will help you stay active and fi t while you have fun.
1. What are the benefits of team sports?
2. What are the benefits of life sports?
3. Is it better to choose a team sport?
4. Can you have fun and stay active?
