ErgonomicsErgonomics What does it mean?

Ergonomics is the study of how humans interact with their environments and the products in them.

Designers must consider ergonomics to ensure products fit well, can be operated appropriately and are easy to understand and use.

ErgonomicsErgonomics Anthropometrics

Anthropometrics is the study of measurements and dimensions of the human body.

As designers you cannot design for 100% of the population. The aim is design for 90% of the population.

ErgonomicsErgonomics Anthropometrics

We are all individuals with different body sizes. The graph below shows the normal distribution curve for a given number of people against a particular body size i.e. height.

ErgonomicsErgonomics Anthropometrics

Generally speaking when designers are considering the following aspects of a design they are influenced by the percentiles highlighted below:

Clearance: 95th percentile

Fit: 50th percentile

Reach: 5th percentile

ErgonomicsErgonomics Anthropometrics

What percentile of standing height should designers consider when designing the height of this bus stop? Why?

ErgonomicsErgonomics Anthropometrics

What percentile of knee to sole of foot size should designers consider when designing the height of this office chair? Why?

ErgonomicsErgonomics Anthropometrics

What percentile of finger length should designers consider when designing the distance to the trigger? Why?

ErgonomicsErgonomics Physiology

Physiology is concerned with the capabilities of the human body.

Is the vacuum cleaner light enough to use as it was intended? Can the trigger be operated easily?

ErgonomicsErgonomics Physiology

How much strength and dexterity is required to operate the tin opener?

ErgonomicsErgonomics Psychology

Psychology is how people interact with products mentally.

How do we know the kettle is boiling the water?

ErgonomicsErgonomics Psychology

How do we distinguish between the buttons? Is this important to how the product functions?

ErgonomicsErgonomics Psychology

How do we know how to heat separate parts of the car?
