Since Lan Shui became Music Director in 1997, the SSO has been distinguished by a high level of excellence and a rising international profile. The SSO has performed around the world and its 6-city tour of London and Germany in 2010 included a sold-out performance at the Berlin Philharmonie. In September 2014 the SSO will make its debut at the BBC Proms in London, one of the greatest music festivals in the world. Among the SSO’s many recordings are a number of CDs which have earned international acclaim. The SSO performs over 50 symphonic programmes a year at its performing home the Esplanade Concert Hall, the Victoria Concert Hall, home of the SSO since 1979, and at other venues. Established in 1979, the SSO’s versatile repertoire spans the all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres, with Asian and Singaporean musicians and composers featuring prominently in the concert season.
Through its many Community Outreach activities, the SSO hopes to bring the enjoyment of classical music performances to all segments of our community, and to develop new audiences through its wide-ranging programmes. Highlights include the Babies’ Proms, Concerts for Children, Discovering Music! series as well as a series of free performances in venues such as the Botanic Gardens and Gardens by the Bay.
To find out more about our Community Outreach programmes, please visit our website www.sso.org.sg or contact our team at hazel@sso.org.sg or vanessa@sso.org.sg.
“This could be one of the great orchestras of the 21st century”The Spectator (London), 23 October 2010
Concerts for Children:
Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding HoodSo begins the orchestra version of Roald Dahl’s delightful Little Red Riding Hood. There’s a wolf, a grandma and a little girl in a red cape. But Roald Dahl has spiced things up. This feisty Little Red certainly doesn’t need a hunter to save her from any wolf! Roald Dahl’s bizarre imagination is brought to life in Dandi Production’s sparkling presentation. Paul Patterson’s score entertains from start to finish with its modern sensibilities and its dazzling dramatic flourishes, inspired by Dahl’s famous text.
As soon as Wolf began to feelThat he would like a decent meal:“When she gets here I’ll have a scheme To turn her into red ice-cream!”

The SSO’s Connect with Music! is an in-school programme which gives students an opportunity to meet and interact with the SSO musicians to make music education more meaningful. Each school visit will be led by SSO’s Associate Conductor, Joshua Tan, where he and selected representatives from the orchestra will perform a popular piece of music, showcase their instruments up-close, introduce the sections of the orchestra, and teach musical concepts in a lively and engaging manner.
By way of storytelling, instrument demonstration, games and listening activities, Connect with Music! aims to inspire and encourage students to appreciate and develop their relationship with classical music.

First formed in 1980, the Singapore
Symphony Chorus (SSC) has established itself as one of the finest choirs in
the region and one of the few symphony choruses in Southeast Asia. Currently helmed by Chorus Director,
Lim yau, the choir performs with the SSO, presenting two to three programmes a year. Chorus members are volunteers from all walks of life, with varied nationalities and a wide range of professions.
Over the years, SSC has amassed a wide repertoire; The 12/13 season included George Fenton’s The Blue Planet Live!,
Beethoven’s only opera Fidelio, perennial favourite, Handel’s Messiah, and choral masterpiece, Britten’s War Requiem. Most recently, the chorus performed in SSO’s celebration of Verdi’s 200th anniversary.
This new season marks a fresh beginning for the choir, with her presentation of 2 choral recitals.

Formed in 2006, the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir (SSCC) adds youthful talent and diversity to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s repertoire.
Budding singers aged between 8 and 14 years undergo training to learn the fundamentals of choral music and singing – breathing techniques, posture, phonetics and diction, and musical literacy.
Since its founding, SSCC has performed with the SSO in works including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Britten’s War Requiem, amongst many others.
