Jedson makes it look easy in McCall

Twin Falls — After last year’sthird place finish in the state le-gion tournament, Wood Riveraimed to make another trip thisyear. The Wranglers; however, raninto early problems in the districttournament in Twin Falls and ulti-mately lost, ending its season.

With the third seed heading in-to last week’s district tournament,Wood River played Burley to openthe first round. Pat Patterson gotthe start, but Burley’s MarcusHoskins got the win as he struckout seven Wood River batters onhis way to a complete game as theBobcats surprised the Wranglersby winning 5-1.

Patterson struggled in 3 1/3 in-nings and gave up nine hits andfive runs. He also struck out fivebatters. The lone bright spots forWood River was Trent Seamons,who finished the day going 1-for-3with a run scored and a stolenbase, and Jimmy Hague, whowent 1-for-3 and knocked in theWrangers’ only run in the seventhinning.

The loss put Wood River in theloser’s bracket to face the IdahoFalls Rangers who lost toKimberly 5-2 in the openinground.

Wood River turned its full at-tention to Idaho Falls and domi-nated every aspect of the game bywinning 11-1 in only five inningsof play. Seamons got the start andthrew a no-hitter in the process.

Seamons said he had no idea ofthe no-hitter during the game andwas notified right after the thirdout in the fifth inning. Idaho Fallsscored its only run when Seamonswalked the very first batter of thegame who would then comearound to score on a fielder’schoice and an error.

Seamons also had a good dayat the plate going 3-for-4 with twoRBIs. In the second inning, GregWakefield added a little excite-ment when he blasted a solo homerun, starting a five-run third in-ning. Wakefield’s home run washis only hit of the day, but he alsoscored three runs.

In the third inning, MichaleBrunker, who would go on to go 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI,singled and would come around toscore off a Patterson double asWood River opened up a five-runinning.

Idaho Falls didn’t help itschances by committing five errorson the day.

Wood River then advanced totake on Blackfoot, which didn’t al-low the Wranglers to get anythinggoing. Blackfoot wound up endingWood River’s season by winning12-0 in five innings.

Blackfoot led 2-0 early beforeblowing the game wide open.Chase Munson hit a solo homerun and Zach Reay chipped inwith a two-run double forBlackfoot.

Wood River stranded runnersin every inning, but couldn’t getany timely hitting. The Wranglersalso hurt themselves by commit-ting six errors.

Blackfoot’s Brakkin Leavitt gotthe win and Wood River’s SeanBunce got the loss. �

Local skateboarding prodigyJedson Waters made it look easyby winning the bronze medal inthe 2008 Concrete Rodeo Tour inMcCall last weekend.

Jedson, who is just 6-years-old,has only been skateboarding for ayear, but has already built an im-pressive resume by winning agold medal in the Fourth of Julyskateboard competition inKetchum and two more silvers,plus his bronze medal.

Jedson was in the 3-to-8-year-old category in the ConcreteRodeo and was the youngest inthe entire competition.

Jedson scored an overall scoreof 58.6. The winner, GabeFerguson, scored 70.6 and secondplace finisher Griffin Chasescored a 65 in the 3-to-8 category.

Other Valley skaters who com-peted in McCall were GeneFairbrother who came in 9th inthe 15-to-16 category, Ben Parkerand Wyatt Caccia who finished12th and 15th, respectively in the11-to-12 catgory.

The event in McCall was thelast leg in the Concrete Rodeo andwas also the grand nationals in the2008 season.

Jedson’s father, Lamar, wasdriving past the Hailey skate parkone day when Jedson began askingquestions about skateboarding.

Lamar gave Jedson the chanceto try out the sport, and low andbehold, Jedson quickly becameaddicted to the thrill and excite-ment.

“Hailey prepped him to go any-where,” Lamar said . “He likes togo fast.”

Jedson Waters has since pickedup snowboarding to complementhis skateboarding and has beenapplying what he learned duringthe winter to his skateboardingcompetitions. �
