On Saturday, December 17, KidsRStrong2 (KRS2) will host the inaugural KRS2 Holiday Charity Kickball Classic. The coed event will take place at Chester L. Davis Sportsplex, located at 1251 W. League City Pkwy., in League City. Teams of 10 or more are invited to attend the fundraiser for a small donation of $300 per team, or $30 per player. Participants must be 14 years or older, and must register at www.kidsrstrong2.org/kickball by the deadline of December 3.

“We expect this to be a fun, family-friendly event. Those who have already registered are extremely excited and working to get the best teams together,” said Tomika Gamble, president and founder of KRS2.

With current and former athletes, as well as coaches from various school districts participating, there will be a lot of competitive folks on the field. Many of who are already joking about winning the championship.

“It’s going to be pretty hilarious to watch these former athletes and coaches try to relive their glory days,” said Gamble while laughing. “They think their still young, but they definitely aren’t what they used to be.”

Not only will there be sports-oriented people in attendance, but there will also be those who are just interested in supporting the cause and having a good time.

Proceeds from the event will be used to support pediatric cancer patients and their families during the Christmas holiday.

“We’ve already received numerous submissions of names of families in need from social workers that we partner with at various local hospitals,” added Gamble.

The plan is to allow the winning team to provide Christmas for a family on the night before Christmas, with the funds raised. Dinner and gifts will be donated, as well as other needs fulfilled, depending on the amount of funds raised from the event.

The Shadow Creek High School Band had a very successful first marching season! In the first year of the new school, the Shadow Creek Band competed at the Katy Marching Festival and UIL Marching Contest in October. In Katy, the band placed third in Class 5A, a huge achievement for a new school, and the SCHS Color Guard was named Outstanding Color Guard in Class 5A. Later in October, the Shadow Creek Band performed at UIL Marching Contest in Clear Lake, and earned a First Division, or Superior, Rating in their first ever UIL contest! The band received numerous compliments from judges and directors alike at both events, and represented Shadow Creek High School and the community very well!

“This has been a great start for the Shadow Creek Band!” SCHS Drum Major Armaan Chokshi stated. “We’ve learned a lot, and have really come together as a group.” Band director Josh Mooney added, “We’re all very proud of these students, and are very excited for the future of the Shadow Creek Band!”

Alvin ISD Dedicates its Third High School, Shadow Creek High School

Hundreds gathered at Shadow Creek High School on Monday, October 24 to celebrate the dedication of Alvin ISD’s third comprehensive high school.

The new campus, located at 11850 Broadway St. in Pearland, opened its doors in August to 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students.

Construction began on Shadow Creek High School in February 2014. The 531,400 sq. ft. facility includes five learning houses, modern instructional spaces for core content, fine arts, athletics, and Career and Technology, as well as a double level auditorium.

“It has been such a pleasure to be able to open this school. These first few months have been so exciting to watch as the students and staff develop and establish an identity and culture for our campus,” said Principal Kelly Hestand.

The pep rally themed dedication began with the singing of the National Anthem by the Shadow Creek High School Choir. Alvin ISD Superintendent Dr. Buck Gilcrease said a few words, followed by reflections by community member Timi Forrest and SCHS teacher Jenna Duff. Students Aaron D’Souza, Aaron Ealdama, and

Josh Villanueva then took the stage and shared details about the development of the school’s alma mater. The three students composed and wrote the song, and as the words of the newly developed song rolled on the screen, the school’s choir sung the alma mater. Alvin ISD Board President, Cheryl Harris then presented Principal Kelly Hestand and her staff and students with a special plaque. In closing, guests were treated with a wonderful video showcasing the beautiful campus.

“I am so proud to be a Shadow Creek Shark,” said junior student Aaron D’Souza. “It has been an honor to be apart of the creation of the new alma mater. This is a song that will live on in any student that walks through these doors.”

“The dedication was a great night! I am so honored to be the principal of such a wonderful school and community,” said Hestand.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup sugar1⁄2 cup white Karo1 dash salt1 cup shelled raw peanuts (or pecans, walnuts, sunflower seed, etc.)1 tablespoon butter or more. With peanut brittle, more is better.1 1⁄2 teaspoons baking soda1 teaspoon vanilla

DIRECTIONSLine baking sheet with wax paper.Spray wax paper, spoon, and anything else the brittle touches

with Pam.Combine sugar, salt and Karo in a 3 quart microwave safe glass

bowl.Stir in peanuts.Microwave on high until light brown (8 to 10 minutes) stirring

at least 2 times during cooking.

Remove from microwave and stir in remaining ingredient adding baking soda last (mix will be foamy).

Stir quickly and pour onto wax paper.Spread thin for brittle candy.Note: You can use any type nuts you prefer or even sunflower seeds

(which is my favorite).

Be careful! This is a hot and sticky recipe.
