COnTEnTSThe key to effective branding is
consistency: Offering the same value,
level of service, and messaging to our
audiences over time.
Building the University’s Reputation
This Brand Identity Guide is designed
to help you align your efforts with the
Colorado State University‐Pueblo
brand. Whether you are developing a
communiqué, proposal, or brochure;
planning an event or presentation; or
creating policies or programs, this
resource can help you produce
communications and inspire
actions that fully represent the
University’s ideals and character.
Colorado State University–Pueblo We are committed to representing the University as a “first choice” institution with valuable and affordable academic offerings and a growing campus community in a location that exemplifies the Colorado lifestyle. In order for Colorado State University-Pueblo to continue to develop this highly visible and recognizable identity, we must make a commitment to maintain the integrity of the brand.
The University as a whole follows the guidelines set forth in this document when developing marketing and communications materials to reach and maintain a level of consistency and quality across the institution.
Perhaps the best and easiest way to ensure brand coherence is to explain how the CSU-Pueblo brand is meant to be presented in order to avoid pitfalls.
InTrODUCTIOnStandards Commitment
Everyone at Colorado State
University-Pueblo has a responsibility
to apply the identity in a consistent and
accurate manner. The Brand Identity
Guide provides direction for continuity
in message and visual identity for
communications.
Be sure to follow the guidelines and
graphic standards to maintain the
integrity of the University’s brand.
1
Building a BrandVision. Mission. Logo usage. Design style. While these elements all are vital to upholding the University’s brand, they are only part of the equation.
Brands are the expectations that stakeholders associate with our University. A brand is not only who we are and what we deliver, but also how we deliver it. At the heart of every brand is a promise to do or offer something compelling. This brand promise serves as a strategic guide within the University to shape our communications, policies, decisions, and actions.
The Brand PromiseAt the heart of your actions and communication considerations is the brand promise to the stakeholders of Colorado State University-Pueblo: an enduring internal statement of what CSU-Pueblo stands for and what we promise to deliver to every individual with whom we come in contact.
Our brand promise is simply stated: Learning. Discovery. Impact. CSU-Pueblo promises every student and stakeholder that learning can lead to discovery and that discovery can and will make a difference – an impact – in this world. To apply the brand promise, ask: How does my college or unit advance this promise?
CSU-PUEBLO BrAnDEffective Communication
All employees shape the Colorado State
University-Pueblo brand through their
actions, comments, and messages to
stakeholders. Each time constituents
come in contact with the University
through a CSU-Pueblo brochure,
telephone call, event, Web page, or even
a faculty or staff member, they naturally
form and reshape their opinions.
The End Result
We continue to improve the credibility
and standing of CSU-Pueblo by delivering
what we promise.
2
The Brand PositionColorado State University-Pueblo’s multi-faceted brand positioning statement explains who CSU-Pueblo is and what the University does.
• Colorado State University-Pueblo is a premier, mid-sized public university that advances the social, cultural, and economic development of the region.
• We attract motivated students who seek a strong academic foundation, a global perspective, and exceptional professional preparation within a world-class university system.
• Students thrive in our welcoming, diverse, and collaborative community.
• Our nationally recognized faculty and outstanding staff provide one-to-one attention, supportive mentoring, and hands-on, career-relevant learning experiences that result in life-changing education.
• Our graduates expand their personal boundaries and achieve their highest individual goals.
• To apply the positioning statement to your programs, interactions, and communications, ask: In which of these areas does my unit play the largest role? How? Be specific.
Messaging DriversThe brand drivers are the key differentiating points that make CSU-Pueblo stand out from our competition.
• One-to-one attention and mentoring • Nationally recognized faculty and outstanding staff • Hands-on, career-relevant learning experiences • Welcoming, diverse, and collaborative community • To apply the drivers, ask: In what ways does my unit exemplify the drivers? How
can my unit distinguish itself to our stakeholders using these drivers?
CSU-PUEBLO BrAnDConsistency Is Key
Significant resources have been invested
in the development and promotion of
the CSU-Pueblo brand identity. To
protect the University’s brand equity, it
is paramount that a clear and consistent
message be maintained throughout all
communication materials.

Equally important to brand
presentation is the consistent use of
designated type families. Copy will
always be set using either the Galaxie
Polaris or Adobe Caslon Pro family of
types. This includes, but is not limited
to, brochures, newsletters, direct mail
campaigns, inserts, and posters.
optional font Design Element
The Confidential font may be used as
a design element within communication
pieces. It is not to be used as body copy
but may be introduced as a border or
divider between images. It is meant as
a design accent and should be used
sparingly. Please see specific examples
on page 10.
4
Color UsageThe designated colors for Colorado State University-Pueblo are an integral part of the graphic identity and help to define our branded image. • It is important to use only the colors on this page. • The Primary Color blue must be an integral part of every color publication. • Blue should be a prominent color on the front cover of any color publication. • These should be the dominant colors integrated throughout any communication with Blue PMS 281 being the predominant color on the front cover of any publication.
Accent Colors are not intended to be used as primary colors, but applied in moderation to enhance design. Colleges or units in the University may also use the Color Palette to further distinguish themselves. Please consult External Affairs if you have specific questions concerning the application of the Accent Colors.
Background ColorsFor backgrounds, use Light khaki PMS 7527, Light Gray 15% Black, or Light Blue PMS 278 at 70%.
Pantone® Color formula GuidePantone Matching System (PMS) assures color matching across several product lines. It is the standard used in the printing industry. Each PMS color is created from various combinations of the colors cyan, magenta, yellow, and black or CMyk.
note: red or Dark red should not be screened to any percentage. red turns pink when screened and contrasts with the recommended color palette.

Color Consistency and Paper Stock Most communication materials should be printed on an uncoated paper stock. Consult with External Affairs design and print staff to determine best stock for your publications. note: Colors will vary from coated to uncoated paper stock.
Copy Colors • 100 percent black should typically be used for all body copy. Or,
reversed white if the background color is dark. Black in 85 percent may be used for body copy as necessary to complement design.
• 100 percent black or 100 percent accent colors (except for Light yellow PMS 120) can be used for call-outs, i.e. bullets, pull-quotes.
• 100 percent black should be used for type smaller that 7 pt., i.e. disclaimers.
Color Combinations Please avoid combinations that work against the CSU-Pueblo’s visual brand identity such as: blue and orange (Denver Broncos); red and green (holiday); green and yellow or blue and yellow (other universities).
Approval ProcessPublications not designed by External Affairs are to be reviewed before going to print or being copied.
External Affairs must review:
• All publications that will be distributed to audiences outside of the University community.
• Publications designed in two‐color or greater intended for the internal University community.
Units should contact External Affairs as early as possible to coordinate timely review of publications prior to print or copy: 719.549.2810.
COLOr/PrInT GUIDELInESPress Checks
External Affairs is responsible for
coordinating press checks for all
four color/digital projects.

Approach to CopyOur mission is to develop relationships with prospective and existing students, alumni, donors, legislators, and any other stakeholders who come in contact with the University.
The copy needs to relay a type of dialogue or conversation, as if you were in the same room together. To that end, we will largely employ the present tense and “us,” “our(s),” and “we” to refer to CSU-Pueblo and “you” and “your(s).”

Isolation AreaIn all applications, the CSU-Pueblo’s logo should be surrounded by adequate clear space. A minimum distance of 1/4” (1/8” for reversed logo in box) must be allowed above, below, and to the sides of the logo. Maintaining this distance will ensure the logo is not crowded by or linked to other visual elements. At no time should copy or other art fall into this clear area.

Photo ConsultationExternal Affairs is growing a photo library with a range of photos that reinforce the brand. Generally, the Colorado State University-Pueblo photo library should be your first resource for image use in all communications.
Contact External Affairs to identify photos for use in your publications.Stock imagery should only be considered after consultation with External Affairs.
Photography StyleA careful approach to lifestyle imagery will create a unique, dynamic presence for CSU-Pueblo. Photos should be selected, as well as executed, based on the following criteria:
• Capture genuine moments of subjects engaged in the University experience in natural settings on campus, in classrooms and other interior locations
• Focus on moments of connection between students, and individual moments of introspection
• Use real students • Include a strong sense of depth • Compose photos that are visually or intellectually dynamic • Promote natural diversity of campus constituents
