Define the Flipped Classroom

When to Flip? Brainstorm some warning signs that warrant a flip (or

lesson re-design):

In Class

Students getting bored

A need to enrich (break) the routine learning

Students are more engaged in their phones than your lecture

Outside Classroom

Students don’t learn/read even though the Internet made learning possible any time, any where since the late 90s.

How Much? Do you have to overwhelm yourself by flipping (re-

designing) the entire course?

If not, how much will you flip?

One lesson

One unit or module

As much as you can without losing enthusiasm

Fully Flipped Vs. Partially Flipped

How to Flip? Brainstorm a list of items you will need to consider

when planning to flip a new or existing lesson:

Items to consider when planning to flip a lesson:

Syllabus, Student Learning

Outcomes, & Schedule

Lectures, Presentations,

& Media

In-Class Learning Activities

Lesson Plans

Homework Assignments

Formative & Summative Assessment

Technology, Resources, &

How to Flip a Lesson Systematically?

ADDIE Instructional Design Model Analysis:

Course student learning outcomes

Students

Motivated to learn?

At-risk learners

Working adults in evening classes

Prior knowledge

Learning constraints:

time

classroom vs. lab (reserve in advance)

iPhone vs. flip phone

How to Flip a Lesson Systematically? ADDIE Instructional Design Model

Design: Course student learning outcomes

Lesson plan for before class & in class

Content/media selection

Learning activities

Hardware/software

Formative Assessment of learning before class

Formative Assessment of learning in class

Summative Assessment of cumulative learning

Formative & summative assessment of the effectiveness of the flipped lesson/module

How to Flip a Lesson Systematically? ADDIE Instructional Design Model

Development:

Course student learning outcomes

Learning before class: create content, media, instructions, formative assessment

Learning in class: create content, media, instructions, formative assessment

Create summative assessment of cumulative learning

How to Flip a Lesson Systematically? ADDIE Instructional Design Model

Implementation:

Rock n’ Roll!

Plan B?

How to Flip a Lesson Systematically? ADDIE Instructional Design Model

Evaluation:

Formative & summative assessment of learning performance

Formative & summative assessment of the effectiveness of the flipped lesson

Collect quantitative and qualitative data

Use such data to revise/improve the flipped lesson/module

How to Flip a Lesson Systematically? What do students do?

1. Learn the content before class & complete Formative Assessment (students are consequence-driven)

2. Actively participate in learning activities in class & complete Formative Assessment

3. Complete Summative Assessment

Content for Learning before Class Existing Content Vs. New Content

Low Tech Content Vs. High Tech Content

Content for Learning before Class Existing Content Vs. New Content

Do you have to create new content to flip a lesson?

Existing Content:

Your own work

The good ole textbook, but It’s in the Book!

Publisher’s & other third-party materials

Copyright issues/written permission

Links to Web sites/media; always choose to open in a new browser/window

Open source, public domain, etc.

Content for Learning before Class Creating Low Tech Content:

Your own text-based instruction/lecture

Advantages of text-based instruction

Easy to create (for instructors who love to write) and revise

Promote reading

Spelling of key terms

Reading instructions is a required JOB SKILL!

Content for Learning before Class Creating High Tech Content:

Multimedia: text, images, drawings, audio, video, animations, screencast

Pros & Cons

Accommodate different learning styles

Time-consuming

Technology learning curve

How to Ensure Students Learn Before Class Formative Assessment for a GRADE!

Independent vs. Collaborative Online lab

Worksheet

Quiz at the beginning of next class

Summary

Reflection

Questions about the content

Students create quiz/test/exam question and answer for possible adoption

Be creative!

Learning Activities in Class Active Learning

Authentic Learning

Collaborative Learning

Independent Thinking/Learning: Don’t deprive any student’s opportunity to think/learn independently. It is a required JOB SKILL!
